William Nugent Glascock
William Nugent Glascock (c. 1787 – 9 October 1847) was an Irish officer in the Royal Navy and a novelist. He saw service during the French Revolutionary Wars, French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and later in the years of relative peace. Early life Glascock was born about 1787 in Baltinglass, County Wicklow, and joined the navy in January 1800, serving aboard the frigate under Captain George Duff. In January 1801 Duff transferred to the 74-gun third rate ship of the line and took Glascock with him. Glascock spent the next few years with Duff seeing service in the Baltic, off the coast of Ireland and in the West Indies. In 1803 he was appointed to the newly built 74-gun and afterwards to the 90-gun , in which he took part in the Battle of Cape Finisterre (1805), Battle of Cape Finisterre on 22 July 1805, and later in the blockade of Brest, France, Brest under Admiral William Cornwallis. Baltinglass, historically known as Baltinglas (), is a town in south-west County Wicklow, Ireland. It is located on the River Slaney near the border with County Carlow and County Kildare, on the N81 road. Etymology The town's Irish name, ''Bealach Conglais'' means "the way of Conglas". It was the name of a palace at Baltinglass, where, according to the Irish etymologist Patrick Weston Joyce, the powerful Leinster king Branduff resided in the sixth century. The Board of Admiralty (1628–1964) was established in 1628 when Charles I put the office of Lord High Admiral into commission. As that position was not always occupied, the purpose was to enable management of the day-to-day operational requirements of the Royal Navy; at that point administrative control of the navy was still the responsibility of the Navy Board, established in 1546. Sir James Robert George Graham, 2nd Baronet (1 June 1792 – 25 October 1861) was a British statesman, who notably served as Home Secretary and First Lord of the Admiralty. He was the eldest son of Sir James Graham, 1st Baronet, by Lady Catherine, eldest daughter of the 7th Earl of Galloway. In 1819, he married Fanny Callander, youngest daughter of Sir James Campbell of Craigforth and Ardkinglas Castle. In the 18th century and most of the 19th, a sloop-of-war in the Royal Navy was a warship with a single gun deck that carried up to eighteen guns.
