William Norreys (captain)
Sir William Norreys (1552 – 25 December 1579) was an English soldier and courtier of the Tudor period. Family and life Norreys died before his 30th birthday. His parents, Henry Norreys, 1st Baron Norreys (died 1601) and Lady Margery ( Williams; died 1599), daughter and co-heiress of John Williams, 1st Baron Williams, both outlived him. He was elected in 1572 as Member of Parliament to represent Berkshire during the reign of Elizabeth I of England and also served as Marshal of Berwick. Norreys campaigned in Ireland from 1573 till 1576 as a Captain of Horse and again in 1579, where he died of fever. His older brother, Sir John Norreys (died 1597), was one of the most acclaimed English soldiers of his day. In 1576, Norreys married Elizabeth Morrison (died 1611), elder daughter of Sir Richard Morrison. They had a son, Francis Norris who became the 1st Earl of Berkshire. Francis Norris, 1st Earl Of Berkshire
Francis Norris, 1st Earl of Berkshire (6 July 1579 – 31 January 1622) was an English nobleman with the title of Earl of Berkshire. He was the son of Captain Sir William Norreys (d. 1579) and Elizabeth Morison, daughter of Sir Richard Morrison of Cassiobury, Hertfordshire, and was born at Wytham in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire). He married Bridget de Vere, although they later separated. The marriage gave Norris access to Bridget's uncle Sir Robert Cecil who was at the heart of the Elizabethan government. Their only issue was Elizabeth Norris. He held the titles Baron Norris of Rycote, 1st Viscount Thame and 1st Earl of Berkshire. He was sent to Fleet Prison after attacking Lord Scrope in front of the House of Lords. He shot himself with a crossbow on 29 January 1622 and died two days later on 31 January. Baron Norreys
The title Baron Norreys of Rycote was created in the Peerage of England by writ for Sir Henry Norris in 1572. The 2nd Baron Norreys was created Viscount Thame and Earl of Berkshire, both titles became extinct on his death. After two female heirs in the 17th century, the barony of Norreys went to the family of Bertie, and its holder, the 5th Baron Norreys became Earl of Abingdon in 1682. Since that time, the barony Norreys of Rycote has been a subsidiary title of the Earls of Abingdon, who have become Earls of Lindsey in the 20th century. Henry Clinton, 2nd Earl of Lincoln, KB (1539 – 29 September 1616) was an English peer, styled Baron Clinton from 1572 to 1585. Known for repeated accusations of extortion, abduction and arson, among other things, Henry was likely among the most feared and hated noblemen in England during his time as Earl of Lincoln. Life The eldest son of the 1st Earl of Lincoln, by second wife Ursula, daughter of William, 7th Baron Stourton, Henry Clinton was appointed a Knight of the Bath in 1553. He was returned to the House of Commons, representing the constituency of Lincolnshire in 1571, having been commissioned a Captain of Horse in the Royal Guards in 1569.
