William Nicol (geologist)
William Nicol FRSE FCS (1768?2 September 1851) was a Scottish geologist and physicist who invented the Nicol prism, the first device for obtaining Polarization (waves), plane-polarized light, in 1828. Early life Nicol was born in Humbie (East Lothian), the son of Walter Nicol and Marion Fowler. According to the parish register, he was baptised on 18 April 1770. Some sources give his date of birth as 1768; other ones (including his gravestone) give 1766. (Note that the gravestone date may be incorrect, as the engraving was done at least 50 years after his death.) William Nicol (surgeon)
William Nicol DL (15 September 1790 – 8 August 1879) was a Scottish surgeon, founder of the firm Wm. Nicol & Co, and Conservative Party Member of Parliament for Dover. He was born 15 September 1790 at Fawsyde, in the parish of Kinneff, in the Mearns. He was educated in Aberdeen. In 1810, Nicol went to Bombay on board the ship Carmarthen as surgeon. Nicol settled in Bombay in 1820 and founded the firm of Wm. Nicol & Co. in Bombay, in 1820. He left Bombay in 1828. Nicol retired from Wm. Nicol & Co. in 1839, and went to England. Nicol was Member of Parliament for Dover Dover () is a town and major ferry port in Kent, South East England. William Nicol (teacher)
William Nicol (1744–1797) was a Scottish schoolmaster, and, if ill-tempered and vain, one of Robert Burns's close friends. He was born in Annan parish at Dumbretton, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Burns referred to him in one letter as "''Kind hearted Willie''" and he accompanied the poet on his August 1787 tour of the Highlands. Burns's third son, William Nicol, born at Ellisland Farm in 1791, was named after his friend, the poet commenting that his newborn son had "''that propensity to witty wickedness and manfu' mischief, which even at twa days auld I foresaw would form the striking features of his disposition.''"
