William Nicholson (English Bishop)
William Nicholson (1 November 1591 – 5 February 1672) was an English clergyman, a member of the Westminster Assembly and Bishop of Gloucester. Life The son of Christopher Nicholson, a rich clothier, he was born at Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, on 1 November 1591. He became a chorister of Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1598, and received his education in the grammar school attached to the college. He graduated B.A. in 1611, and M.A. 1615. He was a bible clerk of the college from 1612 to 1615. In 1614 he was appointed to the college living of New Shoreham, Sussex. He held the office of chaplain at Magdalen from 1616 to 1618. He was also chaplain to Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, during his imprisonment in the Tower of London, from 1606 to 1621, and was tutor to his son, Lord Percy. William Graham Nicholson
William Graham Nicholson, PC, JP (11 March 1862 – 29 July 1942) was a British Liberal Unionist and later Conservative Party politician. Nicholson was born into a famous family of distillers, the son of William Nicholson and brother of John Sanctuary Nicholson, a notable military figure in Imperial Africa. He grew up in Basing Park at Froxfield, which later became his seat. He was educated at Harrow School and at Trinity College, Cambridge. Nicholson served as Director-General on Mobilisation in the Second Anglo-Boer War from 30 June 1901 and was promoted an Honorary Colonel commanding the 3rd Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment. In 1890 he married Alice Margaret Beach, daughter of Rt Hon. William Wither Bramston Beach MP. William Benedict Nicholson, OBE, FRSL (born 12 January 1948) is a British screenwriter, playwright, and novelist who has been nominated twice for an Oscar. Early life A native of Lewes, Sussex, William Nicholson was raised in a Roman Catholic family in Gloucestershire. By the time he reached his tenth birthday he had decided to become a writer. He was educated at Downside School, Somerset, and Christ's College, Cambridge. Career At the start of his career Nicholson worked for the BBC as a director of documentary films with numerous works to his credit between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s. He gained renown as a novelist and playwright when the first book of his popular '' Wind On Fire'' trilogy won the Blue Peter best book award and the Smarties Gold Award for Best Children's Book. William M. Nicholson (born November 18th, 1937) is a sound re-recording mixer at NBC Universal studios in Los Angeles, California. During his lengthy career, he has received numerous awards and nominations, including 5 Emmy awards, 22 Emmy nominations, 2 Cinema Audio Society nominations, and an Academy Award nomination for Martin Scorsese's 1980 film Raging Bull. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Biography Nicholson was born in San Antonio, Texas and grew up in McLean County, Illinois. After serving in the Army in post-World War II Europe, he moved to Los Angeles and took a job as a rent boy, eventually working his way up to sound mixer. After working on feature films for Warner Hollywood Studios, he moved to Todd-AO/ Glen Glenn in the early 1980s to do television post-production. Sir William Newzam Prior Nicholson (5 February 1872 – 16 May 1949) was a British painter of still-life, landscape and portraits. He also worked as a printmaker in techniques including woodcut, wood-engraving and lithography, as an illustrator, as an author of children's books and as a designer for the theatre. Admiral Sir William Coldingham Masters Nicholson, KCB (28 October 1863 – 9 January 1932) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Third Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy. Naval career William Nicholson was educated at Stubbington House School. A Commander in the Royal Navy, he was on 10 September 1902 appointed in command of the torpedo gunboat HMS ''Antelope'', serving in home waters. He served in World War I and, as Captain of HMS ''Canada'', saw action at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. He went on to be Rear Admiral i.e. Second of Command of the 1st Battle Squadron later that year. He was appointed Third Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy in 1919 and was given command of the 2nd Battle Squadron in October 1920. He then became Commander of the 1st Battle Squadron in May 1921. William Jones Nicholson
William Jones Nicholson (January 16, 1856 – December 20, 1931) was a career officer in the United States Army. He attained the rank of brigadier general during World War I as commander of the 157th Infantry Brigade, a unit of the 79th Division. He was most notable for leading his brigade to victory during the September 1918 Battle of Montfaucon, part of the first phase of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, for which he received the Distinguished Service Cross. A native of Washington, DC and the son of a career United States Navy officer, Nicholson was educated in Washington and in 1876 successfully applied for a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army.
