William Morrow (South Australian Politician)
William Morrow (15 September 1872 – 3 July 1934) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1915 to 1934, representing three successive conservative parties, the Liberal Union (Australia), Liberal Union, Liberal Federation and Liberal and Country League. History William Morrow was born in Bairnsdale, Victoria in 1872, and had early experience as a "printer's devil" and machine operator. He moved to Queensland, where he learned the craft of a tailor, then moved to Port Pirie, South Australia in 1891, entering into partnership as tailors and outfitters on Alexander Street with William J. Paull, whom he bought out 12 months later. In 1899 he built new premises at the corner of Ellen and David streets, where the Commonwealth Bank and other businesses were later situated. Bairnsdale, Victoria
Bairnsdale () ( Ganai: ''Wy-yung'') is a city in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia in a region traditionally owned by the Tatungalung clan of the Gunaikurnai people. The estimated population of Bairnsdale urban area was 15,411 at June 2018. Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. The city is a major regional centre of eastern Victoria along with Traralgon and Sale and the commercial centre for the East Gippsland region and the seat of local government for the Shire of East Gippsland. Sir Alexander Lyell McEwin, KBE (29 May 1897 – 23 September 1988), always known as "Lyell McEwin" was a politician in South Australia. History Lyell McEwin was born in the Hundred of Hart, the youngest son of Alexander Lyell McEwin (1862 – 29 December 1927) and Jessie Smilie McEwin née Ferguson who married 30 May 1888. He was educated locally and won a scholarship to Prince Alfred College. He attended the college for a period, but returned to the family farm at age 14. George Ritchie (politician)
Sir George Ritchie KCMG (14 December 1864 – 7 August 1944) was a South Australian politician. During his parliamentary career he held every ministerial position and was a minister in both Houses, a feat rarely equalled. History Ritchie was the third son of Captain James Ritchie (1832 – 23 April 1881) and his wife Alison (12 August 1829 – 20 February 1913). Captain James Ritchie, and five others left Scotland for Australia in the early 1850s sailing the ''Lioness'', a 75-ton River Mersey steamer for Captain Cadell, then became a shipowner trading on the River Murray and Murrumbidgee, when his name was as familiar as those of William Randell and Cadell. One of his feats was to captain the ''Gundagai'', a river boat of 129 feet length, to New Zealand with gold to finance the Maori war. William George Mills
William George James Mills (7 September 1859 – 20 September 1933), generally referred to as W. G. Mills, was a sheep breeder and politician in South Australia. History William was born at "Millbrae", Native Valley, near Nairne, South Australia, the son of Richard Mills the younger (1840–1870). He was educated at Nairne public school and Rev. A. Law's grammar school at Mount Barker. He gained experience as a jackaroo for Robert Browne, manager of Winnininnie Station in the north of the State. He took over his father's farm around 1880 and continued breeding Merino sheep with some success, purchasing valuable rams from Alick J. Murray, and expanded the farm from , including "Bondleigh" farm, later held by his eldest son, W. Champion Mills. In 1928 he took on his son Alec Mills as partner in "Millbrae". John Lewis (12 February 1844 – 25 August 1923) was an Australian pastoralist and politician. He was a member of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1898 to 1923, representing the Northern District (1898-1902) and North-Eastern District (1902-1923). He was the father of Essington Lewis. James Henderson Howe
James Henderson Howe (4 March 1839 – 5 February 1920), was a Scots-born mounted policeman, farmer and politician in South Australia. History Howe was born in Forfar, Forfarshire, Scotland, the son of James H. Howe and his wife Elizabeth, ''née'' Inverwick. and emigrated to South Australia at around age 17, and before age 18 was admitted to the mounted police force, a job which took him all over the colony, and introduced him to such explorers as John McDouall Stuart. He retired from the police force to go into business in Gawler, where he was associated with leading industrialist James Martin. In 1876 he took up farming at Mambray Park, and helped set up a Farmers' Association. Albert Percy Blesing (9 September 1879 – 2 March 1949) was a farmer and politician from South Australia who served as Minister for Agriculture (1933–1944), for Local Government (1933–1938) and for Afforestation (1938–1944). He was a founding member of the Country Party in South Australia and served in the governments of Richard Layton Butler and Thomas Playford IV. Percy Blesing was born in Hamilton, South Australia to Ernst Gotthilf Blesing and his wife Elizabeth (née Flower). Percy's grandparents had emigrated from Germany in 1841 and his family settled in the northern farming areas of South Australia. In 1893, Percy's family moved to Glenholme, a 1400ha mixed farm at Bangor in the lower Flinders Ranges. John George Bice
Sir John George Bice (24 June 1853 – 9 November 1923) was a blacksmith and politician in the colony and State of South Australia. History Bice was born in Callington, Cornwall, the son of Samuel Sandoe Bice (died 1903), a mining captain who was brought out to South Australia in 1864 to work for the Wallaroo and Moonta Mining Company, and for whom he worked for more than 50 years. Young John began his working life in the Moonta mines, improving his education at night school. He was soon indentured as a blacksmith's apprentice, and qualified as a tradesman. In 1876 he took over a machinist's business at Wilmington (then called "Beautiful Valley") owned by the Trewenack brothers of Port Augusta. In 1880 he and W. H. Trewenack took over John Trewenack's blacksmith and wheelwright's business in Port Augusta and prospered.
