William Morice (Secretary Of State)
Sir William Morice (6 November 1602 – 12 December 1676) of Werrington in Devon, was an English statesman and theologian. He served as Secretary of State for the Northern Department and a Lord of the Treasury from June 1660 to September 1668. Life Morice was educated at Exeter College, Oxford. He was elected Member of Parliament for Devon to fill a vacancy in 1648, but was excluded in Pride's Purge in December of that year, probably before he had taken his seat. Nevertheless, he was appointed High Sheriff of Devon in 1651, and returned to Parliament as MP for Devon in the First Protectorate Parliament elected in 1654. He subsequently represented Devon again in the Second Protectorate Parliament, Newport (Cornwall) in the Third Protectorate Parliament. A relation of General Monck, Morice assisted in the Restoration and was knighted in 1660. Sir William Morice, 1st Baronet (c. 1628 – 7 February 1690), of Werrington (then in Devon but now in Cornwall), was an English Member of Parliament. Origins Morice was the eldest son of Sir William Morice, a Member of Parliament who assisted in the Restoration of King Charles II, and was knighted and appointed Secretary of State for the Northern Department in 1660. Career The younger William was created a baronet on 20 April 1661. In 1689, he entered the House of Commons as Member of Parliament (MP) for Newport, in Cornwall, but died a year later. Newport was a rotten borough situated in Cornwall. It is now the suburb of Newport within the town of Launceston, which was itself also a parliamentary borough at the same period. It is also referred to as Newport Iuxta Launceston, to distinguish it from other constituencies named ''Newport.'' History From 1529 until it was abolished by the great reform act of 1832, Newport returned two Members of Parliament. Until the early 18th century, the right to vote was held by all inhabitants paying scot and lot, but subsequently it was converted to a burgage franchise, meaning that the right to vote was tied to ownership of certain properties within the borough, which could be bought and sold at will. This reduced the number of qualified voters: under the scot and lot qualification around 70 people had had the right to vote, but by 1831 the number was only about 12. Sir William Morice, 3rd Baronet
Sir William Morice, 3rd Baronet (c. 1707 – 24 January 1750) of Werrington Park (then in Devon but now in Cornwall) was an English Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1727 to 1750. Morice was the only son of Sir Nicholas Morice, 2nd Baronet and his wife Lady Catherine Herbert, the daughter of Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke. He was educated at Salisbury School, and matriculated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford on 24 August 1724, aged 17. In 1726 he succeeded his father to the baronetcy and Werrington. Morice was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament (MP) for Newport at the 1727 British general election. He was sometime Recorder of Launceston and at the 1734 British general election he was returned in a contest as MP for Launceston. He contributed to the election fund raised by the Cornish Tories in 1741 and was returned unopposed for Launceston at the 1741 British general election.
