William Michael Rooke
William Michael Rooke (29 September 1794 – 14 October 1847) was an Irish violinist and composer. Biography Born William Michael O'Rourke in South Great George's Street, Dublin, he was the son of a local tradesman. He studied counterpoint with Philip Cogan and was probably self-taught on the violin. In 1813, he took up music as a profession and anglicised his surname to Rooke. The young Michael William Balfe was among his pupils on the violin (between 1815 and 1817). While chorus master and deputy leader of the orchestra at Crow Street Theatre between 1817 and 1823, Rooke composed his first opera '' Amilie, or the Love Test'', which, however, was not performed until 1837 (at Covent Garden Theatre, London). South Great George's Street
South Great George's Street is a street in south-central Dublin, Ireland. History Early history and naming The area is associated with Early Scandinavian Dublin. Four burials excavated near South Great George's Street were also associated with domestic habitations, suggesting that the deceased had been members of a settled Norse community, and not the fatalities suffered by a transient raiding party. The street was originally called ''St George's Lane'' and takes its name from a church dedicated to Saint George, patron of England and lepers, which stood here in 1181. The church was rebuilt in 1213 and stood until demolition in 1586. By 1766 it is being called St George's Street, but in 1773 the northern end still referred to as Lane.
