William Maxwell (engraver)
William Maxwell (c. 1766 – September 10, 1809) was the first engraver to publish a newspaper in Cincinnati, Ohio. The paper was called the ''Centinel of the Northwest Territory'', and the first issue was published on Saturday, November 9, 1793. The motto of the paper was "Open to all parties–but influenced by none". He used a portable wood printing press, which he took with him to Lexington, Kentucky and set up a business. In 1793 he left for Cincinnati and began his weekly newspaper, which consisted of four pages and had a limited circulation. The printing press he used was much like the one invented by Johann Gutenberg. In 1796 he printed ''Laws of the Territory of the United States Northwest of the Ohio'' in Cincinnati, a two-hundred and twenty-five page book with one-thousand issues printed. Billy Maxwell
Billy Joe Maxwell (July 23, 1929 – September 20, 2021) was an American professional golfer. Maxwell was born in Abilene, Texas. He played college golf at North Texas State College and helped them win four consecutive NCAA Division I team championships (1949–1952). Maxwell also won the U.S. Amateur title in 1951. After an impressive amateur career, he served in the Army and turned pro in 1954. Maxwell won seven times on the PGA Tour. He also played on the 1963 Ryder Cup team and was elected to the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. He has a twin brother, Bobby, who was also a golfer. He resided in Jacksonville, Florida where, along with former PGA touring pro, Chris Blocker, he owned and operated Hyde Park Golf Club, a Donald Ross designed course. William Sutherland Maxwell
William Sutherland Maxwell (November 14, 1874 – March 25, 1952) was a well-known Canadian architect and a Hand of the Cause in the Baháʼí Faith. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to parents Edward John Maxwell and Johan MacBean. Life Education After attending the High School of Montreal, at the age of 18 he started working for his brother's office in the Sun Life Building in Montreal. In 1895 he left for Boston where he spent three years in the office of Winslow and Wetherel; in the evenings he would study at the Boston Architectural Club. At the Boston Architectural Club he met Constant-Désiré Despradelles, Professor of Design at MIT (1892–1912), who exposed him to the Beaux-Arts architecture style. William John Maxwell
William John Maxwell was a United States Navy officer who served as the 18th Naval Governor of Guam. He entered the United States Naval Academy in 1874, but was not commissioned as an ensign until 1883. He served aboard many ships before becoming one of the inaugural members of the General Board of the United States Navy. Afterward, he commanded both and . After becoming governor in 1914, Maxwell instituted a number of reforms, including establishing the Bank of Guam and the Guam Insular Patrol Force. He also reorganized the tax system and stressed the building and improvement of new roads. His plans to give Guamanians United States citizenship was rejected by then-Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin Delano Roosevelt. William Jardine Herries Maxwell (4 March 1852 – 31 July 1933) was a Liberal Unionist politician in Scotland. Maxwell was the son of Wellwood Herries Maxwell of Munches in Buittle and his wife Jane Home Jardine. Early days Born on 5 August 1846, William Edward Maxwell was the son of Sir Peter Benson Maxwell, the Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements. Career Straits Settlements Maxwell followed his father into the legal profession, and also served in the courts of the Straits Settlements.
