William Martin (painter)
William Martin (1753–; ) was an English history painter. Life William Martin was a pupil and assistant to G. B. Cipriani, , and appears to have resided for about twenty years or more in Cipriani's house. In 1766 he was awarded a gold palette for an historical painting by the Society of Arts. In 1775 he exhibited at the Royal Academy a portrait and ''Antiochus and Stratonice.'' In the next nine years he contributed portraits, scenes from Shakespeare, or classical subjects. In 1791 he sent ''Lady Macduff surprised in her Castle of Fife'', and in 1797 and 1798 portraits. About 1800 he was engaged on decorative paintings at Windsor Castle, which occupied him some years. He was an exhibitor at the Royal Academy again in 1807, 1810, 1812, and 1816. In 1810 his name appears as 'Historical Painter to His Majesty'. In 1812 he was residing at Cranford in Middlesex, and was still living there in 1821; there is, however, no record of his death at that place.Cust 1893, p. 301. Engra ... William Fraser Martin (1834 – 25 October 1917) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Inverness to farmer William Martin and Elizabeth Fraser. The family moved to New South Wales around 1837 and became farmers. Martin followed the gold rushes through New South Wales and Victoria before becoming a farmer in 1859. On 28 April 1859 he married Mary McFarlane, with whom he had two sons. He moved to Sydney to work as a land agent, and in 1880 was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for West Sydney. William Henry Porteous Martin (15 June 1886 – 9 January 1939) was a Scottish Labour Party politician. He was member of parliament (MP) for Dunbartonshire from 1923 to 1924. Martin was unsuccessful candidate in the Dunbartonshire constituency at the 1918 and 1922 general elections, losing only narrowly in the latter contest, before winning the seat at the 1923 general election. He was defeated in 1924 by the Unionist candidate David Fleming, and when Fleming resigned from the House of Commons in 1926, Martin was the Labour candidate at the resulting by-election. William Melville Martin (August 23, 1876 – June 22, 1970) served as the second premier of Saskatchewan from 1916 to 1922. In 1916, although not a member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Martin was elected leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party, succeeding Premier Walter Scott and thus became Premier of Saskatchewan. Prior to entering provincial politics, Martin had been a member of the federal Parliament for two terms, as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. On his retirement from politics, he was appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, serving first as a puisne justice and then as Chief Justice of Saskatchewan.
