William M. Barker
William Muecke Barker (September 13, 1941 – April 3, 2023) was an American jurist. He was the chief justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court from 1995 to 2009. Early life and education Barker was born on September 13, 1941, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, University of Chattanooga, now known as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, in 1964, with a degree in secondary education. While a student at Chattanooga, he became a member of the Delta Theta chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity. In 1967, Barker earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Career After a brief enlistment with the United States Army Medical Corps, he entered private practice until 1983. Tennessee Plan
The Tennessee Plan is a system used to appoint and elect appellate court judges in Tennessee. It is largely patterned after the Missouri Plan, and an earlier version in Tennessee was called the Modified Missouri Plan. At the next general election following a judicial appointment to the highest courts, and at the end of every eight-year term, voters' input occurs by deciding whether each judge shall be retained through a yes-no retention election. This system applies to the Tennessee Supreme Court, the Tennessee Court of Appeals, and the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals. The next regular election for state judges will be in August 2022. In November 2014 a referendum on formally adopting the Tennessee Plan as an amendment to the Tennessee Constitution, clarifying its status, was held, and the Plan's provisions were formally added to the Constitution. The First Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee, located at 554 McCallie Avenue, is a historic, downtown congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and the first Christian congregation founded in Chattanooga. History First Presbyterian Church was formed as the Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga on June 21, 1840, under the leadership of missionaries who had previously served at the Brainerd Mission to the Cherokee. After the "Trail of Tears" the missionaries returned to Chattanooga and began to work among the English American, English, Scotch-Irish American, Scots-Irish, and Welsh American, Welsh in the community and helped plant the new church. Lamar Alexander
Andrew Lamar Alexander Jr. (born July 3, 1940) is a retired American lawyer and politician who served as a United States Senator from Tennessee from 2003 to 2021. A member of the Republican Party, he also was the 45th governor of Tennessee from 1979 to 1987 and the 5th United States Secretary of Education from 1991 to 1993, where he helped the implementation of Education 2000. Born in Maryville, Tennessee, Alexander graduated from Vanderbilt University and the New York University School of Law. After establishing a legal career in Nashville, Tennessee, Alexander ran for Governor of Tennessee in 1974, but was defeated by Democrat Ray Blanton. Alexander ran for governor again in 1978, and this time defeated his Democratic opponent. He won re-election in 1982 and served as chairman of the National Governors Association from 1985 to 1986. Tennessee Supreme Court
The Tennessee Supreme Court is the ultimate judicial tribunal of the state of Tennessee. Roger A. Page is the Chief Justice. Unlike other states, in which the state attorney general is directly elected or appointed by the governor or state legislature, the Tennessee Supreme Court appoints the Tennessee Attorney General. Structure The Tennessee State Constitution, adopted in 1870, calls for five justices, no more than two of whom may come from any one of the state's three Grand Divisions (East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee) in order to prevent regional bias. For the same purpose, the court is required to convene alternately in Knoxville, Nashville, and Jackson. In recent years this provision has been regarded as permissive rather than restrictive.
