William Lucas (Virginia Politician)
William Lucas (November 30, 1800 – August 29, 1877) was a nineteenth-century planter, politician and lawyer from Virginia. Early life Born at Cold Spring near Shepherdstown, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1800 to the former Sarah Rion and her husband, Robert Lucas. His family included an elder brother Edward Lucas, who served as an officer in the War of 1812 when William was a boy. Their Quaker grandfather, Edward Lucas II, moved his family to Virginia from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and patented 400 acres near the Potomac River that much later would be part of Elmwood Farm (established by his son Edward Lucas III in 1797). Edward Lucas II had built Cold Spring for his son Robert in 1793, and his brother (another William Lucas, this man's uncle) built another house called Linden Spring nearby, where his son Robert would be raised before continuing westward and eventually becoming Governor of Ohio. William Brooks Lucas
William Brooks Lucas (July 9, 1891 - March 28, 1970) was a lawyer and state legislator in Mississippi. He served in the Mississippi Senate. He lived in Macon, Mississippi and represented Noxubee County. In 1970 a concurrent resolution commended his life and works while mourning his passing. He first served in the Mississippi Senate in 1944, and served until 1964. He was involved in plans to move the Noxubee County Library into a larger space. William Thomas Lucas
William Thomas Lucas (1875–1973) was a Canadian farmer and a federal politician. He was born in Bailieboro, Ontario, on July 26, 1875, to John William and Margaret (née Fair) Lucas, both of Irish descent. He attended public schooling in the Bailieboro area as well as the Ontario Agricultural College. On 9 January 1903, Lucas married Charlotte "Lottie" Perrin, of Bailieboro. With her he had three children. His religion was listed as Anglican. Lucas was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1921 Canadian federal election as a United Farmers of Alberta candidate. He defeated two other candidates including former Alberta MLA James Bismark Holden in a landslide where he captured 81 percent of the vote to win his first term in office. His electoral district was abolished due to redistribution and he ran for re-election in the new Camrose riding in the 1925 Canadian federal election. William Vincent Lucas was the inaugural Bishop of Masasi during the first half of the 20th century. Born on 20 June 1883 and educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford and St Catherine's Society in the same city, he was made deacon on 23 December 1906, by George Kennion, Bishop of Bath and Wells, at Wells Cathedral. After a curacy at St Michael's Shepton Beauchamp he went to Tanzania as a missionary. He was later the provost and sub-dean of Masasi Collegiate Church and a canon of Zanzibar before his ordination to the episcopate. William Ernest Lucas (16 January 1917 – 24 March 2018) was a British RAF officer and long-distance runner who competed in the 1948 Summer Olympics. In 2017, Lucas was noted for having been Britain's oldest living Olympian. Early life Lucas was born in London, the only child of a bricklayer who had served as a sergeant with the Northamptonshire Regiment during the First World War and had received the Military Medal. After leaving grammar school at 15 in 1932, he worked in London at several jobs, as a packer for a trading house, a clerk for a publisher and as an assessor for a insurance company. William Henry Lucas (15 January 1918 – 1998) was a Welsh international football player in the late 1940s and 1950s. During his career, Lucas made over 400 appearances in The Football League during spells with Swindon Town, Swansea Town and Newport County and attained seven caps for Wales as well as eight wartime caps. After his retirement from playing, he went on to manage two of his former clubs, Newport County and Swansea Town. William Lucas (January 15, 1928 – May 30, 2022) was an American politician. When he was orphaned in his early teens (his West Indian immigrant parents died within a year of each other), he went to live with and was raised by an aunt. He attended Morris High School in the Bronx, and starred on the school track team. Because of his track skill he was offered a number of collegiate athletic scholarships, and accepted one from Manhattan College. He was the first in his family to go to college, and graduated with honors in 1952 with a Bachelor of science degree. After graduation, Lucas spent several years as a teacher and welfare case worker in New York City. In 1953 he joined the New York Police Department, where he remained for nine years, often working undercover in Harlem. From his experiences with the city legal system he decided to become a lawyer, and attended Fordham University at night. William DeVaughn Lucas (January 25, 1936 – May 5, 1979) was a professional baseball infielder who became the first African-American general manager in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Atlanta Braves from mid-September 1976 until his death in early May 1979. A member of the Braves' organization for 23 years, he was inducted into the Ivan Allen Jr. Braves Museum and Hall of Fame in 2006. Biography Lucas was born in Jacksonville, Florida. A graduate of Florida A&M University, he signed as an infielder with the Milwaukee Braves in 1957 and played in the Class C California League.
