William Loftus (archaeologist)
William Kennett Loftus (13 November 1820, Linton, Kent – 27 November 1858, at sea) was a British geologist, naturalist, explorer and archaeological excavator. He discovered the ancient Sumerian city of Uruk in 1849. Biography Loftus was brought up in Rye, East Sussex, and went to school at Newcastle Royal Grammar School. In Cambridge, where from 1840 he studied geology, he was a resident of Caius College. In 1845 he married Charlotte Thulbourne. From 1849 he served as geologist and naturalist with the British government's Turco-Persian Boundary Commission, under Colonel Fenwick Williams (Royal Artillery). The work of the mission gave Loftus and his friend Henry Adrian Churchill the chance to visit ancient sites and, in 1850, to excavate for a month at Uruk (Warka) and Larsa (Senkereh), discovering the Ziggurat of Ur. Marcel-Auguste Dieulafoy (; 3 August 1844 - 25 February 1920) was a French archaeologist, noted for his excavations at Susa (modern-day Shush, Iran) in 1885 and for his work, ''L'Art antique de la Perse.'' Early life Marcel-Auguste Dieulafoy was born in Toulouse into an educated and ennobled family. In 1863, Dieulafoy entered the École Polytechnique where he studied civil engineering. Upon graduating, he joined France's Bureau of roads and bridges, taking up a position in Sour al-Ghozlane (then called Aumale) in Algeria. In 1870, he returned to France, assuming a post in the navigation services on the Garonne. That same year he married Jane Magre (1851-1916), who was also from Toulouse. Tell Sifr
Tell Sifr is an ancient Near East archaeological site in Dhi Qar Governorate Iraq. It lies about nine miles from the ancient city of Larsa. The city lay on a branch of the ancient Iturungal canal. History The site was occupied in the Isin-Larsa and Old Babylonian periods. Larsa king Silli-Adad referred to himself as the governor of Kutalla. In one of his writings Hammurabi refers to an orchard keeper from Kutalla. A god, possibly the city god, known to reside at Kutallu was Lugal-ki-suna. A deified symbol of Marduk, Marru(m)-Ía-Marduk, the "Spade of Marduk" is also attested there. In Parthian times it was used as a cemetery. The Parthian graves are brick vaulted oblongs and painted red inside. Archaeology The site is a small conical mound on top of a platform of about 40 feet in height.
