William Knight Potter
William Knight Potter (December 27, 1844 – August 13, 1914) was a businessman and the 17th Mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, 1892-1894. Early life William was born December 27, 1844, in New York City and spent his early years there. His father was Arthur M. Potter, a jewelry manufacturer. The Potters moved to Providence and William graduated from Providence High School in 1862. At age 18, Potter got his first job working as a bookkeeper for the Archibald B. Rice Lumber Company; in 1872, he married the owner's daughter. In 1881 he became a partner in the business, which was renamed A.B. Rice & Company. Political life Potter was a lifelong Democrat. Between 1887 and 1891 he was elected four times to the State House of Representatives and worked his way up to the chairmanship of the House Finance Committee. Providence City Hall
Providence City Hall is the center of the municipal government in Providence, Rhode Island, and is located at the southwest end of Kennedy Plaza at 25 Dorrance Street. The building was constructed between 1875 and 1878 and designed by Samuel J. F. Thayer in the Second Empire style. In 1975, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it is also a contributing structure to the broader Downtown Providence Historic District. The Need for a City Hall Market House Upon the city's incorporation in 1832, most city business was conducted at the Market House. The City Council, Mayor's Office, and Board of Aldermen were located on the second floor; as the city grew, the city spread to the third floor, and eventually took over the entire building, which became known as the "City Building." Charles Sydney Smith (mayor)
Charles Sydney Smith (October 4, 1828 – August 12, 1907) was 16th mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, in office between 1889 and 1891. Personal life Charles Sydney Smith was born October 4, 1828, in Warren, Rhode Island. At age 12 he moved with a relative to Bureau County, Illinois, which was at that time the far West. He spent four years there working on a farm. The nearest school was three miles away, and he attended school only a few weeks each winter. Smith's first wife was Lavinia Winberg Gorgas, daughter of George Gorgas of Philadelphia. They married on December 12, 1849, and had two children. She died February 26, 1857, aged 23 years. In 1858 Smith married Mary Ann Fish, daughter of John and Nancy Fish of East Greenwich, Rhode Island; they had one daughter. Smith was an active mason for over forty years.
