William Keane (author)
William Keane was a 19th-century English gardener and garden writer, whose descriptions of important gardens in Surrey and Middlesex remain a source of historical reference. Keane was the gardener at Orwell Park, Ipswich, and a contributor to the Journal of Horticulture. He wrote five gardening books, first published between 1849 and 1861. His first work was ''The Beauties of Surrey'', published in 1849, described as being "a particular description of about one hundred and twenty seats of the nobility and gentry, in the County of Surrey, comprising all that is interesting in the departments of horticulture, floriculture, arboriculture, park and pleasure ground scenery, from visits made in the spring of 1849". Keane called his book a "labour of love". William Aloysius "Bil" Keane (October 5, 1922 – November 8, 2011) was an American cartoonist most notable for his work on the newspaper comic ''The Family Circus''. It began in 1960 and continues in syndication, drawn by his son Jeff Keane. Early life and education Keane was born in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania neighborhood of Crescentville, and attended parochial school at St. William Parish and Northeast Catholic High School. While a schoolboy, he taught himself to draw by mimicking the style of the cartoons published in ''The New Yorker''. His first cartoon was published on May 21, 1936, on the amateur page of the ''Philadelphia Daily News''. Billy Keane
William Keane is an Irish former hurler who played as a left corner-back for the Offaly senior team. Born in Banagher, County Offaly, Keane first played competitive hurling in his youth. He made his senior debut with Offaly during the 1984-85 National League, but was dropped from the team before the championship. During his brief career he experienced little success. William Kean (17 March 1871 – 5 January 1954) was a British trade unionist. Born in Sheffield, Kean became a cutler working in silver and a trade unionist. By his early twenties he was secretary of the small Sheffield-based Spoon and Fork Filers, Odd Workers and Stampers Society. From this position, he masterminded a merger of several small unions which formed the National Union of Gold, Silver and Allied Trades (NUGSAT), completed in 1911, and became its first secretary.Trades Union Congress, ''Report of Proceedings at the 86th Annual Trades Union Congress'' (1954), p. 319.
