William Jeffrey (cricketer)
William Michael Jeffrey (21 June 1950 – 2 September 1993) was a Guyanese cricketer who represented the Guyanese national team in West Indian domestic cricket. He was an all-rounder who bowled right-arm off-spin and batted right-handed. Jeffrey was born in the town of Rose Hall, in what is now Guyana's East Berbice-Corentyne region. Rose Hall, Guyana
Rose Hall is a community in the East Berbice-Corentyne Region of Guyana. Rose Hall is 14 miles east of New Amsterdam. History Rose Hall was once owned by Dutch planters and later purchased by former slaves. In 1908, it acquired village status; and it wasn't until 1970 that it became a town. Rose Hall has an area of 13 km2 and a population of about 8,000. Rose Hall is divided into three wards: Middle Rose Hall, East Rose Hall and Williamsburg. Points of interest Rose Hall is a hub for the surrounding areas where people buy raw materials for clothing and grocery in the Berbice region. Two banks and stores lined the main public roads. 1970–71 Shell Shield Season
The 1970–71 Shell Shield season was the fifth edition of what is now the Regional Four Day Competition, the domestic first-class cricket competition for the countries of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). The tournament was sponsored by Royal Dutch Shell, with matches played from 22 January to 23 April 1971. Five teams contested the competition – Barbados, the Combined Islands, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica both won two and drew two of their four matches, but Trinidad and Tobago finished with more points, winning a second consecutive title. Trinidadian batsman Joey Carew led the tournament in runs for a second consecutive season, while Jamaican fast bowler Uton Dowe was the leading wicket-taker. Berbice Cricketers
Berbice is a region along the Berbice River in Guyana, which was between 1627 and 1792 a colony of the Dutch West India Company and between 1792 to 1815 a colony of the Dutch state. After having been ceded to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in the latter year, it was merged with Demerara-Essequibo to form the colony of British Guiana in 1831. It became a county of British Guiana in 1838 till 1958. In 1966, British Guiana gained independence as Guyana and in 1970 it became a republic as the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. After being a hereditary fief in the possession of the Van Peere family, the colony was governed by the Society of Berbice in the second half of the colonial period, akin to the neighbouring colony of Suriname, which was governed by the Society of Suriname. Jones Cup (cricket)
The Guystac Trophy was a Guyanese inter-county cricket tournament, the final of which had first-class status. The tournament was played annually, the final being usually between Demerara and Berbice, two former colonies and now counties of Guyana. The only exception came in 1980/81 when a side from Essequibo Essequibo is the largest traditional region of Guyana but not an administrative region of Guyana today. Berbice Cricket Team
Berbice cricket team played first class cricket in the Guystac Trophy and against the occasional touring team during the 20th century. The team came from the Dutch colony of Berbice, which is now a county of Guyana. History They played their inaugural first class match in March 1960 against the touring Marylebone Cricket Club from England. Berbice were captained by Joe Solomon who opened the batting and scored 201 not out which remained his highest first class score. Other notable players in the side included Basil Butcher who also scored a century, and Rohan Kanhai. In March 1961 they played a draw against EW Swanton's XI and didn't play a first class match again for another decade.
