William Irving Turner
William Irving Turner (1890–1950), commonly known as Tim Turner or W.I. Turner, was an American architect. He served as a Architects of the United States Forest Service, U.S. Forest Service architect and is credited with much of the design of Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon, an important and influential work. He is given individual credit for design of Cascadian Rustic Silcox Hut (alone) and Timberline Lodge (with others as "et al") in their listings in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. He contributed to many works that are listed on the National Register with attribution to USDA Forest Svce. Architecture Group. It is believed that Turner's use of Picturesque style in the Timberline Lodge plans was influenced by architect A.E. Doyle's works. Some of these are listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to the significance of their architecture. Timberline Lodge
Timberline Lodge is a mountain lodge on the south side of Mount Hood in Clackamas County, Oregon, about east of Portland. Constructed from 1936 to 1938 by the Works Progress Administration, it was built and furnished by local artisans during the Great Depression. Timberline Lodge was dedicated September 28, 1937, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The National Historic Landmark sits at an elevation of , within the Mount Hood National Forest and is accessible through the Mount Hood Scenic Byway. Publicly owned and privately operated, Timberline Lodge is a popular tourist attraction that draws two million visitors annually. Silcox Hut
The Silcox Hut is a small rustic mid-mountain lodge located at elevation on Mount Hood, Oregon, United States. It is approximately vertical above Timberline Lodge and roughly one mile distance directly up the mountain. Silcox Hut was built by the WPA and finished in 1939. It was named after Ferdinand Silcox, the fifth Chief of the Forest Service, 1933–1939. The hut was the upper terminal of the original Magic Mile chairlift and housed the lift's upper bullwheel in what is now the guest sleeping quarters. It was also intended as a warming hut and starting point for climbers. After the chairlift was relocated in 1962, it was abandoned and became derelict due to vandalism and fierce mountain weather. In 1966, the Portland State University Outdoor Program leased the Hut. The students of the Program made a few improvements to the hut including repairs to the fireplace hearth and new window shutters.
