William Humphries Stephens
William Humphries Stephens (1739–c.1820) was an 18th/19th century British sculptor. Life He was born in 1739 the son of Joseph Stephens, a stonecutter in Worcester. He was apprenticed to his father in 1751 and became a Freeman mason in 1760. Longden
Longden is a village and civil parish in Shropshire, England. It is located southwest of Shrewsbury. Longden village There is a public house (the ''Tankerville Arms'') and a post office/shop, along with a church, and a primary school. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 1,266. It also has a village hall with a recreational field, children's play park and a private tennis club. According to mid-2007 population estimates, the parish had a population of 1,325. In the south end of the village is hexagonal brick gazebo, built about 1870, in the garden wall of Hall Farmhouse. Powick is a village and civil parish in the Malvern Hills district of Worcestershire, England, located two miles south of the city of Worcester and four miles north of Great Malvern. The parish includes the village of Callow End and the hamlets of Bastonford, Clevelode, Collett's Green, and Deblins Green. Powick lies on the A449 and has two bridges across the River Teme, one ancient and one modern. Eastnor, Herefordshire
Eastnor is a village in Herefordshire, England, east of Ledbury and the same distance from the tripoint of the county with Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. Eastnor Castle built by Earl Somers (d.1841) is within its medieval-founded parish which it is named after. The settlement is also the main settlement of its civil parish. The 12th-century church of St John the Baptist was redesigned and rebuilt by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1852 and is a grade I listed building. Charles Cocks, 1st Baron Somers
Charles Cocks, 1st Baron Somers (29 June 1725 – 30 January 1806), known as Sir Charles Cocks, 1st Baronet, from 1772 to 1784, was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1747 to 1784. Life Cocks was the son of John Cocks and his wife Mary Cocks who was his cousin and daughter of Thomas Cocks of Castleditch and was born on 29 June 1725. His paternal grandfather Charles Cocks was the husband of Mary Somers, sister of John Somers, 1st Baron Somers, Lord Chancellor of England. He matriculated at Worcester College, Oxford in 1742 and entered Lincoln's Inn in 1745, where he was called to the bar in 1750. Cocks was elected Member of Parliament for Reigate in the 1747 general election and held the seat until 1784. He was appointed Clerk of Deliveries of the Ordnance from 1758 to 1772 and Clerk of the Ordnance from 1772 to 1782. Richard Hurd (bishop)
Richard Hurd (13 January 1720 – 28 May 1808) was an English divine and writer, and bishop of Worcester. Life He was born at Congreve, in the parish of Penkridge, Staffordshire, where his father was a farmer. He was educated at Brewood Grammar School and at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He took his B.A. degree in 1739, and in 1742 he proceeded M.A. and became a fellow of his college. In the same year he was ordained deacon, and given charge of the parish of Reymerston, Norfolk, but he returned to Cambridge early in 1743. He was ordained priest in 1744. In 1748 he published some ''Remarks on an Enquiry into the Rejection of Christian Miracles by the Heathens'' (1746), by William Weston, a fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. He prepared editions, which won the praise of Edward Gibbon, of the ''Ars poetica'' and ''Epistola ad Pisones'' (1749), and the ''Epistola ad Augustum'' (1751) of Horace. Overbury
Overbury is a village and civil parish in Worcestershire, England, midway between Evesham and Tewkesbury south of Bredon Hill. Ashford Bowdler is a small village and civil parish in south Shropshire, England, near the county border with Herefordshire. Geography The parish lies south of the market town of Ludlow. The Parish is bisected West to East by the A49. The village of Ashford Bowdler lies 2.5 miles (4.0 km) South of Ludlow on the western side of the River Teme, facing the larger Ashford Carbonell, at an elevation of between and above sea level. Gloucester Cathedral
Gloucester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity, in Gloucester, England, stands in the north of the city near the River Severn. It originated with the establishment of a minster dedicated to Saint Peter and founded by Osric, King of the Hwicce, in around 679. The subsequent history of the church is complex; Osric's foundation came under the control of the Benedictine Order at the beginning of the 11th century and in around 1058, Ealdred, Bishop of Worcester, established a new abbey "a little further from the place where it had stood".
