Bill Hume (footballer)
William McLeod Hume (1 December 1937 – 10 December 2005) was a footballer. Born in Alloa, Scotland, Hume signed as an apprentice for Hibernian in 1955, before emigrating to New Zealand the following year. Hume represented both New Zealand and Australia at international level. His senior career began with Hamilton Wanderers before he moved to Australia to join Gladesville-Ryde in the NSW Premier League, and later playing for Sydney Hakoah. He returned to New Zealand in the early 1960s playing out his career with club side Hamilton Wanderers. Hume made his full All Whites debut in a 2–3 loss to Australia on 16 August 1958 and made four more appearances over the following month, scoring a total of six goals, the last of his A-international caps being in a 2–1 win over New Caledonia on 14 September 1958. Bill Hume (cartoonist)
William Stanton Hume (March 16, 1916 – June 27, 2009) was an American artist, actor, author, playwright, photographer, film producer, corporate art director, and newspaper man. While stationed in Japan as part of the post World War II occupying force, Hume created the cartoon Babysan which depicted American servicemen in Japan. This comic was very popular with service members in Japan and was published in '' Stars and Stripes'', ''Yank Magazine'', and other military publications. Shortly after his return to the United States, Hume published four books with John Annarino about his time in Japan. Billy Hume
William Sanderson Hume (18 December 1935 – 15 August 1990) was a Scottish professional footballer who played in the Scottish Football League for Dunfermline Athletic, St Mirren and Berwick Rangers, in the Football League, for Birmingham City, and in the Irish Football League and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup for Glentoran. He played as a wing half or inside forward. Career Hume was born in Armadale, West Lothian. He played for nearby Seafield United and Whitburn before joining Dunfermline Athletic in 1955, for whom he made his Scottish League debut during the 1956–57 season. He played four Division One games, scoring once, and the next season played five Division Two games, again scoring once, and one game in the Scottish League Cup. Willie Hume
William Hume (3 April 1862 – 1941The Bicycle, 12 Nov 1941, p6) was an Irish cyclist. He demonstrated the supremacy of John Boyd Dunlop's newly invented pneumatic tyres in 1889, winning the tyre's first ever races in Ireland and then England. Career In March 1889 Hume, the captain of the Belfast Cruisers Cycling Club, was the first member of the public to purchase a "safety bicycle" fitted with Dunlop's newly patented pneumatic tyres. Dunlop suggested that it would be advantageous to Hume to use them in a race. Thus on 18 May 1889 he won all four cycling events at the Queen's College Sports held on the North of Ireland Cricket Club Grounds, (or Queens College playing fields) at Cherryvale, Belfast. William Hume (Cape Politician)
William Arthur Hume (June 1837 – 2 Mar 1916) was a prominent politician of the Cape Colony and the Member for Port Elizabeth in the Cape Parliament. Early life Born in Grahamstown in 1837, Hume became a citrus farmer in the Sundays river valley and moved to Port Elizabeth, where he settled. He married Louisa Mary Carlisle in 1871. Politics (1874-75) A merchant who was successful in business, he entered politics and was elected as the MLA for Port Elizabeth from 1874 until only the next year. Separatism Hume was a member of the "Eastern Cape Separatist League", that strove for a separate Colony for the white settlers of the Eastern Cape. This movement later split between those who supported Grahamstown as a future political centre, and those who supported Port Elizabeth. William Errington Hume
Sir William Errington Hume (14 July 1879, Newcastle-on-Tyne – 1 January 1960) was a British physician and cardiologist. Biography After education at Repton, William Errington Hume matriculated in October 1897 at Pembroke College, Cambridge and graduated there BA in 1900. After medical education at the London Hospital, he graduated MB BChir and MA in 1904 and MD in 1913 from the University of Cambridge. At the London Hospital, he clerked for Sir Bertrand Dawson. At the Royal Victoria Infirmary, after holding junior appointments from 1904 to 1907, at age 28 he was appointed assistant physician and, six months later, full physician. He held this post until 1939 when he retired as consulting physician. He qualified MRCP in 1909. In WWI, Hume served from 1914 to 1919 in the RAMC, attaining the rank of colonel. Dr William Fraser Hume FRSE (1867–1949) was a British geologist specialising in Egypt. Life He was born in Cheltenham in England on 1 October 1867 the son of George Hume. He received his early education in Russia and at College Galliard in Lausanne in Switzerland. He then attended the Royal College of Science and Royal College of Mines in the University of London under John Wesley Judd graduating BSc around 1887. He began lecturing at the Royal College of Science in 1890 and received a doctorate (DSc) in 1893. In 1897, he moved to Egypt to assist with a huge geological survey of the whole country and in 1909 became Director of the entire Geological Survey of Egypt. In 1910, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were John Horne, Ben Peach, John Walter Gregory, Sir John Smith Flett and James Ireland. William Hume Blake, (10 March 1809 – 15 November 1870) was an Irish-Canadian jurist and politician. He was the father of Edward Blake, an Ontario Premier and federal Liberal party of Canada leader, and the first Chancellor of Upper Canada. He was born at his grandfather's home, Humewood Castle, Kiltegan, County Wicklow, Ireland, the son of the Rev. Dominick Edward Blake, and Ann, daughter of William Hume (1747–1798) MP, of Humewood Castle. His ancestors were counted among the Tribes of Galway. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin. William Hume-Rothery OBE FRS (15 May 1899 – 27 September 1968) was an English metallurgist and materials scientist who studied the constitution of alloys. Early life and education Hume-Rothery was born the son of lawyer Joseph Hume-Rothery in Worcester Park, Surrey. His grandfather, William Rothery, was a clergyman. His campaigning grandmother, Mary Hume-Rothery, was the daughter of Joseph Hume, a Scottish doctor and Radical Member of parliament. William spent his youth in Cheltenham and was educated at Cheltenham College. In 1917 he was made totally deaf by a virus infection. Nevertheless, he entered Magdalen College, Oxford, and obtained a first class Honours degree in chemistry. He also attended the Royal School of Mines and was awarded a PhD.
