Billy Hughes
William Morris Hughes (25 September 1862 – 28 October 1952) was an Australian politician who served as the seventh prime minister of Australia, in office from 1915 to 1923. He is best known for leading the country during World War I, but his influence on national politics spanned several decades. Hughes was a member of federal parliament from Federation in 1901 until his death, the only person to have served for more than 50 years. He represented six political parties during his career, leading five, outlasting four, and being expelled from three. Hughes was born in London to Welsh parents. He emigrated to Australia at the age of 22, and became involved in the fledgling Australian labour movement. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1894, as a member of the New South Wales Labor Party, and then transferred to the new federal parliament in 1901. Bill Hughes (cricketer)
William John Hughes (14 November 1859 – 4 December 1934) was a New Zealand cricketer who played first-class cricket for Hawke's Bay from 1892 to 1906. Hughes was born in Invercargill and lived for some years in Timaru. A medium-paced bowler, he was one of the leading players for South Canterbury in the 1880s before moving to Napier in 1891. He took 5 for 40 and 2 for 29 for Hawke's Bay against Auckland in 1894-95. William Hughes FRGS (1818 – 21 May 1876) was an English geographer, cartographer, author and academic. Life In early life Hughes was in business as an engraver in Pentonville, London. In 1840 he became a lecturer at St John's College, Battersea. Hughes was Professor of Geography at King's College and Queen's College, London and Royal Female Naval School. He was for many years Examiner in Geography to the College of Preceptors. He died at his home, Adelaide Road, St John's Wood, London. Works Hughes was the author of many books; atlases for the classroom, and books for biblical studies and general reference. He was also a prolific editor of reference works and textbooks. William Henry Hughes (March 28, 1930 – January 14, 2018) was an American jazz trombonist and bandleader. He spent most of his career with the Count Basie Orchestra and was the director of that ensemble until September 2010. Biography Early life and career Bill Hughes was born in Dallas, Texas, and his family moved to Washington, D.C., when he was nine years old. His father worked at the Bureau of Engraving and played trombone in the Elks Club marching band. Hughes began playing the trombone at age twelve or thirteen and was performing at Washington jazz venues by the age of sixteen. One of these venues was the 7T Club, where he performed with saxophonist and flautist Frank Wess. While students at Howard University, Hughes and Wess played in the Howard Swingmasters, along with bassist Eddie Jones. William Hughes (7 July 1909 – 1 January 1996) was a Scottish footballer who played mainly as an outside left, although he was a versatile player who could operate in several positions. His longest spell was with Celtic where he made over 100 appearances in all competitions and spent seven seasons but was a regular starter only in one ( 1933–34), otherwise being seen as a squad member who could fill in for several roles. He was not selected for the club's two Scottish Cup finals during the period in 1931 and 1933 despite playing in earlier rounds, and only made four appearances when they won the Scottish Football League in 1935–36, so it is unlikely that he received a winner's medal from a major competition. He began his league career with Bathgate, departing when the club went defunct, and after leaving Celtic played for Clyde and Arbroath, in a more defensive role than in his early career. William Hughes (1865 – 14 November 1919) was a Welsh international footballer. He was part of the Wales national football team between 1891 and 1892, playing 3 matches. He played his first match on 7 March 1891 against England and his last match on 26 March 1892 against Scotland. He played his club football for Bootle, where he was an ever-present in the club's first season in the Football League, making 22 appearances. At the end of the 1892–93 season, however, Bootle resigned from the league. He subsequently joined Liverpool. An obituary described him as "one of the best centre half-backs that Bootle boasted". After his playing career ended, he worked as a steward for the White Star Company. He died in a motorcycle accident in November 1919.
