William Howland (musician)
William A. Howland (1 May 1871 – 3 May 1945) was an American operatic bass, voice teacher, composer, conductor and university administrator. He was the head of the music department at the University of Michigan from 1900-1914. In 1914 he co-founded the Detroit Institute of Musical Arts; serving as the school's vice-president and head of the vocal department until his death 31 years later. Early life and education Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Howland was the youngest of six children born to Emma Lane Howland and her husband Dr. Asa Allan. His mother was a direct descendant of John Howland, a pilgrim who travelled from England to North America on the ''Mayflower'', signed the Mayflower Compact, and helped found Plymouth Colony. His father was a prominent dental surgeon and was notably the first president of the Dental Association of New England. William Goldwin Carrington Howland
William Goldwin Carrington Howland (March 17, 1915 – May 13, 1994) was a Canadian lawyer, judge and former Chief Justice of Ontario. Life and career Howland was born in Toronto and educated at Upper Canada College. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1936, and afterwards enrolled at Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1939. During World War II, Howland served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He appointed Queen's Counsel in 1955 and was elected bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1961, serving as its treasurer from 1968 to 1970. William Holmes Howland
William Holmes Howland (11 June 1844 – 12 December 1893) was Mayor of Toronto from 1886 to 1887. He was also a member of the Orange Order in Canada. Biography Prior to William Holmes Howland becoming Toronto's 25th mayor, he was a businessman who was elected president of the Board of Trade in 1874-1875. He was involved in many causes like the Toronto General Hospital, the Toronto Bible Training School, the Christian Missionary Union, the Mimico Industrial School for Boys and he was interested in improving the living conditions of the slum areas of the city. He turned to municipal politics to try to help the city with problems like drunkenness, slum conditions, filthy streets and to clean up the foul water supply. In 1884 the Ontario legislature changed voting laws to allow women to vote. Unmarried women and widows of voting age that owned or rented property assessed at over $400 were allowed to vote.
