William Horsell
William Horsell (31 March 1807 – 23 December 1863) was an English hydrotherapist, publisher, and temperance and vegetarianism activist. Horsell published the first vegan cookbook in 1849. Biography Horsell was born in Brinkworth, Wiltshire. Before the age of twenty he was preaching the gospel and became a temperance activist in 1833. In 1838, Horsell established the Anti-Nicotine Society at Congleton, Cheshire. Horsell founded the Nature's Beverage Society in 1842. The Society aimed to spread abstinence from all artificial beverages. Horsell operated a hydropathic infirmary at Northwood Villa, Ramsgate.Spencer, Colin. (1995). Brinkworth, Wiltshire
Brinkworth is a village and civil parish in northern Wiltshire, England. The village lies between Royal Wootton Bassett and Malmesbury, about north of the M4 motorway and west of Swindon. The west end of Brinkworth village is Causeway End. The civil parish of Brinkworth includes the hamlets of Braydon Side, Callow Hill, The Common, and the tithing of Grittenham, a rural community to the south of the village of Brinkworth. Much of Brinkworth village is a linear settlement along the east-west B4042, extending for some . The village is sometimes described as the longest in England although others such as Meopham, Kent make the same claim. History Brinkworth Manor was given to Malmesbury Abbey by the nobleman Leofsige, sometime before the Domesday Book survey. The abbey held the land until the Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time it was granted to William Stumpe. Asenath Nicholson
Asenath Hatch Nicholson (February 24, 1792 – May 15, 1855) was an American vegan, social observer and philanthropist. She wrote at first hand about the Great Hunger in Ireland in the 1840s. She wrote about the life of Ireland both before and during the crop failures that caused famin as she walked the country distributing copies of the Bible, food and clothing. Life Nicholson was born in Chelsea in Vermont in 1792. Her family belonged to the Protestant Congregation Church and she was named after the biblical Asenath, the daughter of Potipherah and wife of Joseph. She trained and became a successful teacher in her hometown before she married Norman Nicholson, a widower with three children, and went to live in New York. They family became interested in the diet recommended by Sylvester Graham. In the 1840s they ran a boarding house that offered this vegetarian diet.
