William Herbert Burns
William Herbert Burns (February 27, 1878 - January 1, 1964) was a Canadian politician and merchant. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as a Member of the Conservative Party of Canada in the 1930 election to represent the riding of Portage la Prairie. He was defeated in the 1935 election. Born in Stayner, Ontario, Burns was elected councillor of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and became mayor in 1921 until 1930. Burns was named to the team that represented the Manitoba Curling Association at the 1932 Winter Olympics. That year, curling was a demonstration sport. Burns was skip for the team which took first place in the event. The Manitoba team was undefeated, winning all four of its games at the Olympics. Portage la Prairie was a federal electoral district in Manitoba, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1904 to 1949. This riding was created in 1903 from parts of Macdonald riding. It was abolished in 1947 when it was redistributed into Norquay, Portage—Neepawa and Selkirk ridings. Curl Manitoba (formerly the Manitoba Curling Association) is the organization responsible for curling in the province of Manitoba. Its stated mission is "to promote, develop and grow the sport of curling in Manitoba, Canada and the world by providing leadership, services and programs for the curling community from grassroots to elite.". Manitoba Sports Hall Of Fame And Museum
The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is a Canadian museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, dedicated to honoring the history and achievements of sports in Manitoba. The organization began in 1980, and then opened a museum in The Forks in 1993. After five years, the museum moved to The Bay store on Portage Avenue. Its present-day location is the Sport Manitoba building (145 Pacific Ave.), where it had its grand opening on October 27, 2012. Exhibits of Manitoba's sports teams and honoured athletes are displayed in the museum. The Hall of Fame inducts both individuals as well as teams.
