William Pope, 1st Earl Of Downe
William Pope, 1st Earl of Downe (1573 – 2 June 1631), known as Sir William Pope, 1st Baronet from 1611 to 1628, was an English peer. Pope was the son of John Pope and Elizabeth Brocket, daughter of Sir John Brocket. He was a nephew of Sir Thomas Pope and he inherited his extensive estates in Oxfordshire. In 1601 he was appointed High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, and he was made a Knight of the Bath at the coronation of James VI and I as King of England in 1603. On 29 June 1611 he was created a baronet, of Wilcote in the Baronetage of England. In 1618, Pope completed the reconstruction of the family seat at Wroxton Abbey in the Jacobean style at a cost of £6,000. The house was subsequently visited by King James I as a guest of Pope. In 1628, Pope purchased an earldom in the Irish Peerage for £2,500, and he was created Earl of Downe and Baron Pope of Belturbet on 16 October that year. William Pope (naturalist)
William Pope (8 January 1811 – 1902) was an English-Canadian naturalist and amateur painter who lived most of his life in Ontario, Canada. Notable wildlife artist Fenwick Lansdowne stated that Pope "gave us the first comprehensive, well executed pictorial record of Canadian birds." According to Pope's biographer, Pope contributed "a great deal" to Canada's settler heritage through his paintings and journals. Pope's watercolours of birds are often compared to the works of John James Audubon, though Pope's works were smaller in size and ambition. William Burt Pope
William Burt Pope (19 February 1822–5 July 1903) was an English Wesleyan Methodist minister and theologian, who was president of the Methodist Conference. Biography Early life William Burt Pope was born at Horton, Nova Scotia, on 19 February 1822. He was the younger son of John Pope (1791–1863), Wesleyan missionary and Catherine, born Uglow, who was originally of Stratton, Cornwall. He was the younger brother of George Uglow Pope. After education at a village school at Hooe and at a secondary school at Saltash, near Plymouth, William spent a year in boyhood (1837-8) at Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, assisting an uncle, a shipbuilder and general merchant. In 1845, he married Ann Ehza Lethbridge, daughter of a yeoman farmer of Modbury, near Plymouth. By her he had six sons, two of whom died in early life, and four daughters. William Henry Pope (Canadian Politician)
William Henry Pope (May 29, 1825 – October 7, 1879) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, journalist, judge and one of the Fathers of Confederation. He was born in Bedeque, P.E.I.(Prince Edward Island), the son of Joseph Pope and Lucy Colledge. He was educated in England, but returned to Charlottetown where he studied law at the office of Edward Palmer. He became a lawyer in 1847. The editor of Prince Edward Island's main Tory newspaper, ''The Islander'', from 1859 to 1872, he entered politics in 1863. He was named Colonial Secretary in 1859 even though he was not a part of the legislature because of a government experiment of having civil servants head the government departments. When he became a representative for the constituency of Belfast in 1863, he continued to hold that position. He was one of the hosts of the Charlottetown Conference in 1864. William Hayes Pope (June 14, 1870 – September 13, 1916) was the last Chief Justice of New Mexico Territory and the first United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico after New Mexico attained statehood. Sir William Jackson Pope (31 March 1870 – 17 October 1939) was an English chemist. Biography William Jackson Pope was born on 31 March 1870 in Hoxton to William (a saddler) and Alice (née Hall). His parents were staunch and active Wesleyans who had eight children, of whom William was the eldest. In 1878 he entered the Central Foundation School, in London, where his ability to learn rapidly gave him leisure at the age of twelve to carry out simple chemical experiments in his bedroom. While at school he also developed great skill as a photographer—many of his early photographs were in perfect condition fifty years later. From there he moved to the Finsbury Technical College, where he learned much from H E Armstrong; the two later became close friends. Pope studied crystallography under H. A. Willie Pope
William Robert Pope (December 14, 1918 – June 10, 2010), nicknamed "Wee Willie", was an American Negro league pitcher for the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Homestead Grays between 1946 and 1948. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Pope was the brother of major leaguer Dave Pope, and served in the US Army during World War II. After one year with Pittsburgh, he joined the Homestead Grays. Pope tossed a no-hitter for the Grays in 1947 against the New York Cubans, and was a member of the Grays' 1948 Negro World Series championship club, recording a key triple during the series against the Birmingham Black Barons. William Kenneth Pope
William Kenneth Pope was a bishop of The Methodist Church, elected in 1960. He was elected by the South Central Jurisdictional Conference of the Church and assigned the Arkansas Episcopal Area, encompassing the North Arkansas and Little Rock Conferences; and then the North Texas and Central Texas Annual Conferences, where he served from 1964 until his retirement in 1972. After retirement he served as Bishop-in-Residence at the Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. He was a former chairman of the University's regents. He lived in Dallas, Texas. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Bishop Pope died of natural causes Monday, June 26, 1989. He was 87 years old. He was survived by a daughter, Katherine Pope of Southport, Connecticut; and a son, Kenneth, of Norwalk, Connecticut.
