William Henry Ellis (engineer)
Sir William Henry Ellis, GBE (20 August 1860 – 4 July 1945) was a British civil engineer and steel maker. Ellis was born on 20 August 1860 in Pitsmoor, Sheffield, Yorkshire. He was the son of John Devonshire Ellis (1824–1906) and, his wife, Elizabeth Bourne. In 1889 Ellis married Lucy Rimington, the daughter of Francis William Tetley who was a director of Joshua Tetley & Son, the brewery in Leeds. Together they had two sons and two daughters. Ellis was a steel maker and in 1914 was elected Master Cutler, the head of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and ambassador of industry for Sheffield. His tenure as Master Cutler, a position which usually changes each year, lasted until 1918 due to the outbreak of the First World War. In 1918 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering by the University of Sheffield. William Henry Ellis (1819 – March 28, 1858) was an English-born politician in Newfoundland Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region. The province comprises the island of Newfoundland and the continental region .... He represented Fogo in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1855 to 1858. He was born on the Isle of Wight and came to Newfoundland around 1838. He was a member of a committee formed to protest a Fishery Convention between England and France in January 1857 granting the French fishing rights on the south and west portions of Newfoundland; the treaty was dropped by Britain in May of the same year. William Henry Ellis (businessman)
William Henry Ellis (also known as Guillermo Enrique Eliseo; June 15, 1864September 24, 1923) was an American businessman. Early life Ellis was born on June 15, 1864, in Victoria, Texas, to Charles Ellis and Margaret Nelson Ellis, former slaves. He later claimed that his parents were Cuban or Mexican, rather than African, and styled himself as "Guillermo Enrique Eliseo". Ellis was fluent in Spanish. He first worked on a ranch, assisted in leather dealing, and later inspecting customs, trading cattle, and growing cotton. Career and activism In 1888 he started farming cattle in Mexico. In the late 19th century he was a member of the Republican Party, particularly supporting Norris Wright Cuney. Ellis also became close to Henry McNeal Turner. Both Turner and Cuney supported the back-to-Africa movement, while Ellis supported colonizing African-Americans to Latin America, specifically Mexico.
