William Hayes FRCPI FRS FRSE LLD (18 January 1913 – 7 January 1994) was an Irish geneticist. Early life He was born in Rathfarnham, Co Dublin, the only son of William Hayes, a successful Dublin pharmacist, and his second wife, Miriam, née Harris. Hayes was still a child when his father died, and he lived with his mother and grandmother and was educated at home by a governess, before going to a preparatory school in Dalkey and then in 1927 to St Columba's College at Rathfarnham, where his early interest in science began to develop as a hobby. He read medicine at Trinity College, Dublin, graduated BA in Natural Science in 1936 and qualified in medicine the following year (MB, BCh, University of Dublin). Career He completed internships at the Victoria Hospital, Blackpool and Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital, Dublin, before becoming an Assistant to his mentor, Professor J W Bigger, in the Department of Bacteriology at Trinity College. William "Billy" Hayes (born April 3, 1947) is an American writer, actor, and film director. He is best known for his autobiographical book ''Midnight Express (book), Midnight Express'' about his experiences in and escape from a Turkish prison, after being convicted of smuggling hashish. He was one of hundreds of US citizens in foreign jails serving drug charge sentences, following a drug-smuggling crackdown by foreign governments. Background Hayes, an American student, was caught trying to smuggle four pounds (1.81 kg) of hashish out of Turkey on October 7, 1970. He was originally sentenced to four years and two months in a Turkish prison. With his release date weeks away, he learned that the authorities had chosen to penalize him with a life sentence for smuggling, instead of possession. William Hayes (born 12 November 1930, Killorglin) is an Irish-born physicist and academic administrator, active in the United Kingdom. Biography Hayes was educated at Synge Street CBS; University College, Dublin; and the University of Oxford. Hayes came to St John's College, Oxford as an Overseas Scholar in 1955. At St John's, he was Fellow and Tutor from 1960 to 1987; and Principal Bursar from 1977 to 1987. Hayes was a University Lecturer from 1962 to 1985, and Professor from 1985 to 1987. Hayes was President of St John's College, Oxford from 1987 to 2001. He was Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford from 1990 to 2001. Hayes specialised in crystals, and studied imperfections in crystals and defects in solids. William P. Hayes ( – 17 November 1913) was a pioneer and pastoralist in Central Australia. He is best known for establishing a cattle empire over 13,478 square km of land, including Undoolya, Deep Well, Maryvale, Mount Burrell and Owen Springs Stations near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. Early life Hayes was born in Liverpool in the United Kingdom and grew up in Wales, where as a young adult he became a butcher. Hayes migrated to Australia at the age of 21, arriving in Adelaide. He took up work in various locations throughout remote South Australia, including Yednaloo Station, north of Port Augusta and then Canowie. He purchasing a team of bullocks. In the drought of the mid-1860s, he lost all 30 bullocks.
