William Hartley (martyr)
William Hartley (born at Wyn, in Derbyshire, England, of a yeoman family about 1557; executed 5 October 1588) was an English Roman Catholic priest. He is a Catholic martyr, beatified in 1929. Life At eighteen he matriculated at St John's College, Oxford, where he became a chaplain. Being removed by the vice-chancellor, Tobias Matthew, in 1579 n suspicion of Catholic tendencies, he went to Reims in August, was ordained at Châlons on 24 February 1580, and returned to England in June of that year.Pollen, John Hungerford. William James "Bill" Hartley (born June 12, 1945) was a child care worker, restaurant owner and political figure in British Columbia, Canada. He represented Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1991 to 2001 as a member of the NDP. He served as Speaker of the assembly from 2000 to 2001. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, the son of Fred Hartley and Betty MacPherson, and was educated at Simon Fraser University Simon Fraser University (SFU) is a public research university in British Columbia, Canada, with three campuses, all in Greater Vancouver: Burnaby (main campus), Surrey, and Vancouver. William Leonard Hartley
William Leonard Hartley (December 12, 1916 – May 4, 2003) was an electrician, insurance salesman and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Yale from 1963 to 1966 and Yale-Lillooet from 1966 to 1975 as a New Democrat. He was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan, the son of Leonard Hartley and Sarah Ann Lee, both natives of England, and grew up in Clayburn, British Columbia. Hartley settled in Mission, B.C. He was president of the North Fraser Co-operative Association and served on the board of C.U. & C. Health Services. Hartley ran unsuccessfully a number of times as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation candidate for a seat in federal elections, before he was elected provincially for the New Democratic Party in 1963. He was subsequently re-elected three times. He served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Public Works, in the New Democratic Party government from 1972 to 1975 Hartley was defeated when he ran for re-election in 1975. Sir William Pickles Hartley
Sir William Pickles Hartley (23 February 1846 – 25 October 1922) was an English jam manufacturer and philanthropist who founded the Hartley's jam company. Biography Hartley was born in Colne, Lancashire, the only surviving child of John Hartley, a tinsmith, and his wife, Margaret Pickles. The family had lived near Pendle since c. 1620 and worked as grocers, building Wycoller Hall towards the end of the 16th century. He married Martha Horsfield. Hartley attended a local British and Foreign School Society school. The business started in 1871 as the result of a chance event. It is said that when a supplier failed to deliver a batch of jam, William made his own. His jam, marmalade, and jelly sold well in his own distinctive earthenware pots and in 1874 the business transferred to Bootle. William Henry Hartley (26 October 1930 – 18 February 2006) was an Australian political activist who was State Secretary of the Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party between 1965 and 1970. Hartley was born in Southern Cross, Western Australia and before his involvement in left-wing politics, he was a Young Liberal and was active in the University of Western Australia's Liberal Club. He also edited the student newspaper. Service in the RAAF in the early 1950s, combined with the Suez Crisis and the Split in the Labor movement, radicalised Hartley and he joined the ALP in 1956. After this, he combined his journalism with his new politics, becoming co-editor of the ALP's WA newspaper, the ''Western Sun''. Hartley lost his position as State Secretary when formal intervention in the Victorian branch by the Federal ALP Executive led to the replacement of the Victorian Central Executive of the Party in October 1970. Bill Hartley (athlete)
William John Hartley (born 27 June 1950) is an English former athlete. Athletics career Hartley was raised in Lydiate, Lancashire (now Merseyside) on the outskirts of Liverpool where his family ran a market garden. He began his athletic career at age 13 as a high jumper. By age 18 he held the Under-19 record for 400m hurdles (52.9 seconds). Following success in national and international competition, Hartley won a silver medal representing England at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand and then a gold medal at the European Championships in Rome in the 400m relay. He also represented England in the 400 metres hurdles event, at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was a member of the winning Europa Cup 4 × 400 m relay team, along with Alan Pascoe, David Jenkins and Jim Aukett.
