William H. Nicholas
William H. Nicholas (October 10, 1892 – August 13, 1984) was an American politician who served twice as the Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. Early life and education Born in Butler County, Iowa to William A. Nicholas and Elizabeth H. Nicholas, Nicholas raised turkeys in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa and served in the United States Navy during World War I. Career Nicholas served as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives from 1946 to 1948. Later, he served as the 34th Lieutenant Governor of Iowa from 1951 to 1953 serving under Governor William S. Beardsley and from 1957 to 1959, serving under Governor Herschel C. Loveless. He died in Mason City, Iowa. The Iowa House of Representatives is the lower house of the Iowa General Assembly, the upper house being the Iowa Senate. There are 100 seats in the Iowa House of Representatives, representing 100 single-member districts across the state, formed by dividing the 50 Senate districts in half. Mason City is a city and the county seat of Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, United States. The population was 27,338 in the 2020 census, a decline from 29,172 in the 2000 census. The Mason City Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Cerro Gordo and Worth counties. It is commonly referred to as the "River City", as the city grew up centered on the Winnebago River. History The region around what would later be first called Shibboleth was a summer home to the Sioux and Winnebago nations. The first settlement that became Shibboleth was established in 1853 at the confluence of the Winnebago River and Calmus Creek.
