William H. Dieterich (senator)
William Henry Dieterich (March 31, 1876October 12, 1940) was an American lawyer and Democratic politician from Illinois. He was a state legislator, U.S. Representative, and U.S. Senator Biography He was born near Cooperstown, Illinois. After graduating from Kennedy Business College in 1897 and Northern Indiana Law School in 1901, Dieterich was admitted to the bar and began to practice in Rushville, Illinois. During the Spanish–American War, he served as a corporal. He was city attorney for Rushville, 1903–1907; treasurer of Rushville Union Schools 1906–1908; and county judge of Schuyler County, 1906–1910. In 1911 he moved to Chicago, and then in 1912 to Beardstown, Illinois, in Cass County, adjacent to Schuyler, where he continued his law practice. In 1916, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives, and re-elected in 1918, serving from 1917 to 1921. Ruth Hanna McCormick
Ruth McCormick (née Hanna, also known as Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms; March 27, 1880 – December 31, 1944), was an American politician, activist, and publisher. She served one term in the United States House of Representatives, winning an at-large seat in Illinois in 1928. She gave up the chance to run for re-election to seek a United States Senate seat from Illinois. She defeated the incumbent, Senator Charles S. Deneen, in the Republican primary, becoming the first female Senate candidate for a major party. McCormick lost the general election. A decade later, she became the first woman to manage a presidential campaign, although her candidate, Thomas E. Dewey, failed to capture his party's nomination. Classes Of United States Senators
The 100 seats in the United States Senate are divided into three classes for the purpose of determining which seats will be up for election in any two-year cycle, with only one class being up for election at a time. With senators being elected to fixed terms of six years, the classes allow about a third of the seats to be up for election in any presidential or midterm election year instead of having all 100 be up for election at the same time every six years. The seats are also divided in such a way that any given state's two senators are in different classes so that each seat's term ends in different years. Anton Joseph Cermak ( cs, Antonín Josef Čermák, ; May 9, 1873 – March 6, 1933) was an American politician who served as the 44th mayor of Chicago, Illinois from April 7, 1931 until his death on March 6, 1933. He was killed by an assassin, whose likely target was President Franklin D. Roosevelt, but the assassin shot Cermak instead after a bystander hit the assassin with a purse. Life Cermak was born to a mining family in Kladno, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic), the son of Antonín Čermák and Kateřina née Frank(ová). Otis Ferguson Glenn (August 27, 1879March 11, 1959) was a Republican United States Senator from the State of Illinois. He was born in Mattoon, Illinois on August 27, 1879. After graduating from law school in 1900 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he began practicing law in Murphysboro. He served two terms as the State's Attorney for Jackson County, once from 1906 to 1908 and again from 1916 to 1920. He was elected as a member of State Senate in 1920, serving for one term, until 1924. In 1928, when Frank L. Smith resigned the U.S. Senate seat he had won in 1926, after twice having his credentials refused by the Senate, Glenn defeated future Chicago mayor and Democrat Anton Cermak in a special election, 54.5 to 44.9 percent respectively, to serve out Smith's term.
