William Gillespie (actor)
William Gillespie (24 January 1894 – 23 June 1938) was a Scottish actor. Biography Gillespie started in Hollywood films from the silent era. He played in about 180 films between 1915 and 1939, although his appearances were often uncredited. Gillespie frequently appeared in Hal Roach comedies from 1917, usually as stuffy official or manager. He supported such "slapstick comedians" as Charlie Chaplin, Charley Chase, Our Gang, and Laurel and Hardy, but was most prolific supporting Harold Lloyd in 60 films. William Gillespie (New Zealand Politician)
William Henry Gillespie (14 August 1893 – 23 April 1961) was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. He was a cabinet minister from 1960 to 1961. Biography Gillespie was born in 1893. He received his education at Ashley Gorge and Oxford District High School, and left school aged 13 following his father's death. He represented the Canterbury electorate of Hurunui from 1943 to 1961, when he died, causing the for Hurunui. From 1958 to 1960 he was Shadow Minister of Agriculture and Lands while National was in opposition. At the formation of the Second National Government he was appointed a member of Cabinet, having been designated as Minister of Agriculture on 12 December 1960. William Ernest Gillespie
William Ernest Gillespie (February 9, 1912 – November 5, 1967) was an American educator who served as assistant principal, dean of faculty, and interim principal at Phillips Exeter Academy. Early life and career Gillespie was born on February 9, 1912, in Exeter, New Hampshire, to Walter and Margaret (Alexander) Gillespie. His father taught Latin at Phillips Exeter from 1910 to 1940. He was educated at local public schools, and graduated from Phillips Exeter in 1929. He went on to study at Princeton University, where he graduated in 1933, and earned his MA and PhD degrees in classics in 1935 and 1937, respectively. Beginning his career in teaching Latin at Exeter in September 1939, he was only absent from the school for three years when he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Lieutenant William John Gillespie was a World War I flying ace credited with five aerial victories. Gillespie was a student at Daysland Daysland is a town in central Alberta, Canada. It is on Highway 13, approximately east of Camrose. History The community was named for its founder and first mayor, Edgerton W. Day, who purchased of land from the CPR in 1904 to form the bas ..., Alberta before joining the military. He was posted to 41 Squadron on 11 December 1917. He scored five victories between 25 March and 7 July 1918; all of them were of the "driven down out of control" type. On 18 August 1918, he was hospitalized with influenza and sat out the duration of the war. Gillespie returned to Canada and died in Edmonton in 1967. Bill Gillespie (born March 10, 1946), is a Canadian journalist and author. He was security correspondent for CBC News and a former bureau chief of CBC Radio's Moscow bureau. As a foreign correspondent, Gillespie reported extensively from Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnya and the Russian Caucuses, relaying information on the fall of the Taliban, the dismantling of Saddam Hussein's statue in Baghdad's central square, and the deadly siege of Beslan School Number One. He played for Manchester City between 1897 and 1905. Career Gillespie was born in Bridgeton, Glasgow on 2 October 1873. He began his football career playing for his local team Strathclyde. In 1895 he signed for Lincoln City who were then in the Second Division of the English Football League, alongside his elder brother Matt. In 37 games for the team he scored 16 goals. Manchester City In January 1897 Gillespie signed for Manchester City who were also in the second tier of English football. He formed an effective partnership with the Welsh outside right Billy Meredith. He scored his first goal for City in a 3–1 defeat to Darwen. William Ballintrae Gillespie (6 August 1891 – 2 July 1981) was an Irish association football, football player who played as a Forward (association football), striker for Sheffield United F.C., Sheffield United over a twenty-year period from 1913 to 1932, scoring over 137 League and Cup goals in 492 games for the South Yorkshire side. Gillespie was born in Kerrykeel, County Donegal, Ireland and began his career with Irish side Institute F.C., Institute in 1907. After a short spell with Linfield F.C., Linfield he moved to England to play for Leeds City F.C., Leeds City in 1910 before moving to Sheffield United in 1912, where he would stay until he retired from playing. Gillespie also made 25 appearances for the Ireland national football team (1882–1950), Ireland national team.
