William Frost
William Frost (28 May 1848 – March 1935) was a Welsh designer of an early flying machine, the Frost Airship Glider. Biography William Frost was born on 28 May 1848 in Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire, to Rebecca and John Frost. His ambition to invent a flying machine started about 1880. Despite his poverty he constructed the "Frost Airship Glider", which seems, in principle, to have resembled a vertical takeoff airplane, with gas-filled tanks. From the patent description: The flying machine is propelled into the air by two reversible revolving horizontally. When sufficient height is gained, wings are spread and tilted by means of a lever, causing the machine to float onward and downward. When low enough the lever is reversed causing it to rise upward & onward. When required to stop it the wings are tilted so as to hold against the wind or air and lowered by the reversible fans. The Frost Airship Glider was an aircraft designed and constructed in Wales during the mid-1890s by William (Bill) Frost. According to patent specification 1894-20431, issued in London, the craft was simply called "A Flying Machine". The preamble to the specification states: The flying machine is constructed with an upper and lower chamber of wire work covered with light waterproof material. Saundersfoot
Saundersfoot ( cy, Llanusyllt; Old Welsh: ''Llanussyllt'') is a large village and community (and former electoral ward) in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is near Tenby, both being holiday destinations. Saundersfoot lies in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. The village population was 3,361 in 2011. while the community had a population of 2,628. History Saundersfoot was known in medieval Wales as ''Llanussyllt'', and after the Norman conquest as ''St Issels'' (sometimes ''Issells''), both after the parish church dedicated to the Welsh saint Issel. VTOL
A vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft is one that can take off and land vertically without relying on a runway. This classification can include a variety of types of aircraft including helicopters as well as thrust-vectoring fixed-wing aircraft and other hybrid aircraft with powered rotors such as cyclogyros/cyclocopters and gyrodynes. Some VTOL aircraft can operate in other modes as well, such as CTOL (conventional take-off & landing), STOL (short take-off & landing), or STOVL (short take-off & vertical landing).
