William F. Opitz
William F. Opitz was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Biography A German emigrant, Opitz was born in about 1816. He moved to what is now Mequon, Wisconsin in 1839. Opitz died at his home in Grafton (town), Wisconsin on June 16, 1882. He was brother-in-law of Adolphus Zimmermann. Career Opitz was elected to the Assembly in 1860. Other positions he held include Chairman (similar to Mayor) of Grafton, as well as Sheriff and a member of the County Board of Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. Wisconsin State Assembly
The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Since 1973, the state has been divided into 99 Assembly districts apportioned amongst the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 99 representatives. From 1848 to 1853 there were 66 assembly districts; from 1854 to 1856, 82 districts; from 1857 to 1861, 97 districts; and from 1862 to 1972, 100 districts. Mequon, Wisconsin
Mequon () is the largest city in Ozaukee County, in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, and the third-largest city in Wisconsin by land area. Located on Lake Michigan's western shore with significant commercial developments along Interstate 43, the community is a suburb in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Despite being an incorporated city, approximately half of Mequon's land is undeveloped and agriculture plays a significant role in the local economy. At the time of the 2010 census the population was 23,132. When the first white settlers arrived in the 1830s, the Mequon area was inhabited by the Menominee, Potawatomi, and Sauk people. In the 1840s, German immigrants settled in the community, building farms and hydropowered mills along the Milwaukee River. Grafton (town), Wisconsin
The Town of Grafton is a town located in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States, and is in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The town was created in 1846 and at the time of the 2020 Census had a population of 4,157. Grafton is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan. German and Irish immigrants first settled in Grafton in the 1840s. Their centers of settlement became the unincorporated communities of Lakefield and Ulao, as well as the Village of Grafton, which is partially located in the town. History The first Europeans to visit the area were the Jesuit missionaries Claude-Jean Allouez and Claude Bablon, who visited a Native American village on the Milwaukee River near the future site of Grafton around the year 1670. Adolphus Zimmermann
Adolphus (or Adolph) Zimmermann (February 23, 1812 – July 15, 1891) was an American brewer and politician from Mequon, Wisconsin. Born in the village of Noschkowitz outside Ostrau in the Kingdom of Saxony, Zimmermann emigrated to the United States. He landed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Territory on August 1, 1839; two days later, he married Fredericka Opitz (who had emigrated from Saxony on the same vessel on which he came, along with her brother, mother, father, and sister-in-law); one week later they settled on Section 22 of the Town of Mequon, where they purchased 160 acres of land (the Opitzes buying lots nearby) near the Green Bay Road. They lived there until 1855, when they sold the farm and moved into the Village of Mequon. Ozaukee County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 91,503. Its county seat is Port Washington, making it one of three Wisconsin counties on Lake Michigan not to have a county seat with the same name.
