William Ernest Payne
William Ernest Payne (October 1, 1878 – April 21, 1943) was a lawyer and politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1931 to 1935 as a member of the Conservative Party. Early life Payne moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1902 and joined the law firm started by George Wellington Greene. He worked as a lawyer at Greene and Payne in Red Deer for many years until he attempted to win a seat in the Alberta Legislature. Political career Payne ran as a Conservative candidate in the 1926 Alberta general election in Red Deer. He ran against incumbent George Smith and former MLA John Gaetz. He was eliminated on the second vote count, losing to Smith. Payne faced Smith again in a two-way race in the 1930 Alberta general election. He was defeated by 88 votes. 1926 Alberta General Election
The 1926 Alberta general election was held on June 28, 1926, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The United Farmers of Alberta government that had first been elected in 1921 was re-elected, taking a majority of the seats in the Alberta Legislature. Herbert Greenfield had resigned as United Farmers leader and premier, and John E. Brownlee led the UFA to this second election victory, increasing the UFA's number of seats. The writs of election were issued on May 10, 1926, allowing an election period of 40 days. 1926 was Alberta's first general election where Single transferable voting (STV) was used in the three largest cities and Instant-runoff voting was used everywhere else. William Hector Payne
William Hector Payne (5 July 1914 – 18 April 1989) was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was an insurance agent and sales manager by career. He was first elected at the Coast—Capilano riding in the 1958 general election defeating Liberal incumbent James Sinclair. Payne made a previous unsuccessful attempt to win the riding in the 1957 election. Daniel Massey (24 February 1798 – 15 November 1856) was an American-born blacksmith and businessman in what is now Newcastle, Ontario, who began production of agricultural implements in 1847. Life and career Massey was born in Windsor, Vermont, to Daniel Massey Sr. and Rebecca Kelley. The Massey family originated in Cheshire, England, and arrived in America around 1630, first in Essex, Massachusetts, and later in New Hampshire and Watertown, New York. His parents, Daniel and Rebecca Massey, moved their family to Upper Canada at some point between 1802 and 1807. He subsequently lived and studied in Watertown, New York, but he later returned to Upper Canada to run his father's business. Alberta Social Credit was a provincial political party in Alberta, Canada, that was founded on social credit monetary policy put forward by Clifford Hugh Douglas and on conservative Christian social values. The Canadian social credit movement was largely an out-growth of Alberta Social Credit. The Social Credit Party of Canada was strongest in Alberta, before developing a base in Quebec when Réal Caouette agreed to merge his Ralliement créditiste movement into the federal party. 1935 Alberta General Election
The 1935 Alberta general election was held on August 22, 1935, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The newly founded Social Credit Party of Alberta won a sweeping victory, unseating the 14-year government of the United Farmers of Alberta. It was one of only five times that Alberta has changed governments. Premier John E. Brownlee had resigned on July 10, 1934, when he was sued and found liable for the seduction of a young clerk working in the Attorney-General's office. Although the verdict was immediately set aside by the presiding judge, the scandal seriously damaged the UFA's reputation among socially conservative Albertans. Provincial Treasurer Richard G. Reid succeeded him, but was unable to change the party's fortunes. John Gaetz
John Jost Gaetz (June 6, 1859 – December 24, 1937) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1918 to 1921 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government. Early life Gaetz moved to the Red Deer area with his mother Catherine Gaetz in the fall of 1885. They applied for and got homesteads in the area. The area is now known as the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary. Political career Gaetz ran for a seat as the Liberal candidate in a by-election held on October 28, 1918. He won the district easily over Conservative candidate F.W. Galbraith. Red Deer is a city in Alberta, Canada, located midway on the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor.
