William Edwards School (formerly William Edwards School and Sports College), commonly referred to by locals and students as Willy Eds, is a Mixed-sex education, coeducational Secondary school, secondary Comprehensive school (England and Wales), comprehensive school with Academy (English school), academy status, in Grays, Essex, Grays, Essex, England. It is a founding member of the South West Essex Community Education Trust (SWECET) and is its leading member. The current Head teacher, headteacher of the school is Simon Bell. The school first opened on 11 September 1962, gained Specialist schools in the United Kingdom, specialist Sports College, sports college status in 2002 and in 2004 also became a Training school (United Kingdom), training school. The school achieved outstanding in its Ofsted inspection of December 2010 after which it closed to make way for the current academy status school, reopening on 1 August 2011. Academy (English School)
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. The terms of the arrangements are set out in individual Academy Funding Agreements. Most academies are secondary schools, though slightly more than 25% of primary schools (4,363 as of December 2017) are academies. Academies are self-governing non-profit charitable trusts and may receive additional support from personal or corporate sponsors, either financially or in kind.
