William Edward Compton
William Edward "Bill" Compton III (December 29, 1945 – June 21, 1977) was an American radio personality best known for creating Phoenix's first free-form radio station, KCAC-AM, and helping to "invent" notable AOR station, KDKB-FM. Compton Terrace, an amphitheater in Phoenix was named in his honor and he was inducted into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2005. Early life Compton was born in Henderson, Texas, but his family soon moved to Tyler, Texas where he attended John Tyler High School and got his first disc jockey job in 1964. Radio career Compton first began to influence Phoenix radio in 1969 when top-40 radio station KRUX-AM hired him to host a Sunday night free-form show. Free-form, or free-form radio, is a radio station programming format in which the disc jockey is given total control over what music to play, regardless of music genre or commercial interests. Freeform radio stands in contrast to most commercial radio stations, in which DJs have little or no influence over programming structure or playlists. In the United States, freeform DJs are still bound by Federal Communications Commission regulations. KXXT (1010 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a Christian talk and instructional format. Licensed to Tolleson, Arizona, United States, the station serves the Phoenix area. KXXT uses the slogan "Family Values Radio" and is owned by Salem Media Group (under the licensee Salem Communications Holding Corporation), KXXT is co-owned with Talk radio KKNT 960 AM Phoenix and KPXQ 1360 AM in Glendale, which also broadcasts a Christian radio format. KXXT operates with 15,000 watts by day, and can be heard as far south as Tucson and as far north as Cottonwood. But, because 1010 kHz is a Canadian clear channel frequency, KXXT must reduce its power to 250 watts at night to not interfere with other radio stations also operating on 1010 kHz. Album-oriented rock (AOR, originally called album-oriented radio) is an FM radio format created in the United States in the 1970s that focuses on the full repertoire of rock albums and is currently associated with classic rock. Album-oriented radio was originally established by U.S. radio stations dedicated to playing album tracks by rock artists from the hard rock to progressive rock genres. In the mid-1970s, AOR was characterized by a layered, mellifluous sound and sophisticated production with considerable dependence on melodic hooks. Compton Terrace was a name given to two former outdoor amphitheaters for concerts, located in the Phoenix metropolitan area of Arizona. It was named in honor of a local radio personality and music promoter, William Edward Compton. History The first Compton Terrace was located on the grounds of Legend City in Tempe, from 1979 until its closing and demolition in 1983. It was owned by Jess Nicks, the father of musician and singer Stevie Nicks. Compton Terrace at Firebird Lake A second location named Compton Terrace amphitheater opened in Chandler in 1985 (located next to the Firebird International Raceway at ). Many arterial roads in the Phoenix metropolitan area have the same name in multiple cities or towns. Some roads change names or route numbers across town borders, resulting in occasional confusion.
