William Edge (mathematician)
William Leonard Edge FRSE (8 November 1904 – 27 September 1997) was a British mathematician most known for his work in finite geometry. Students knew him as WLE. Life Born in Stockport to schoolteacher parents (his father William Henry Edge being a headmaster), Edge attended Stockport Grammar School before winning a place at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1923 with an entrance scholarship, later graduating MA DSc. In 1928 Trinity College made him a Research Fellow and he was also an Allen Scholar. William Edge was a geometry student of H. F. Baker at Cambridge. Edge's dissertation extended Luigi Cremona’s 1868 delineation of the quadric ruled surfaces in projective 3-space RP3. Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) is an award granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's national academy of science and letters, judged to be "eminently distinguished in their subject". Bonnyrigg ( sco, Bonnyrigg) is a town in Midlothian, Scotland, eight miles (13 kilometres) southeast of Edinburgh city centre. David Gibb (mathematician)
David Gibb FRSE (31 October 1883 – 28 March 1946) was a Scottish mathematician and astronomer. He was the first person to use the term ''numerical integration''. Life Gibb was born in Methil near Leven, Fife on 31 October 1883, the eldest son of Robert Gibb, a salt manufacturer, and his wife Joanna. He attended Leven Public School then George Watsons College in Edinburgh (1896–99). He studied mathematics and sciences at the University of Edinburgh graduating in 1906 with a MA/BSc. While a student he lodged with a Mr Flockhart at 3 West Preston Street, Edinburgh. In 1909 he began lecturing in mathematics at the University. Edward Thomas Copson FRSE (21 August 1901 – 16 February 1980) was a British mathematician who contributed widely to the development of mathematics at the University of St Andrews, serving as Regius Professor of Mathematics amongst other positions. Life He was born in Coventry, and was a pupil at King Henry VIII School, Coventry. He studied at St John's College, Oxford. He was appointed by E. T. Whittaker as a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, where he was later awarded a DSc. He married Beatrice, the elder daughter of E. T. Prof Herbert Westren Turnbull FRS FRSE LLD (31 August 1885 – 4 May 1961) was an English mathematician. From 1921 to 1950 he was Regius Professor of Mathematics at the University of St Andrews. James William Peter Hirschfeld (born 1940) is an Australian mathematician, resident in the United Kingdom, specializing in combinatorial geometry and the geometry of finite fields. He is an emeritus professor and Tutorial Fellow at the University of Sussex. Hirschfeld received his doctorate in 1966 from the University of Edinburgh with thesis advisor William Edge (mathematician), William Leonard Edge and thesis ''The geometry of cubic surfaces, and Grace's extension of the double-six, over finite fields''. The London Mathematical Society (LMS) is one of the United Kingdom's learned societies for mathematics (the others being the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the Edinburgh Mathematical Society and the Operational Research Society (ORS).
