William Drummond (colonial Governor)
William Drummond (born ca.1617, died 1677) was the first colonial governor of Albemarle Sound settlement in the Province of Carolina and a participant in Bacon's Rebellion. Early life and career Drummond was born in Scotland and came to Virginia in 1637 as an indentured servant to Theodore Moye. He was an indentured servant to Stephen Webb in 1639. He rose to the positions of Justice of the Peace and High Sheriff of James City County. He discovered a large, circular lake in the center of the Great Dismal Swamp in 1655, now named Lake Drummond. In 1664, Drummond was chosen to be governor of the Albemarle County colony (which would eventually become North Carolina) by Virginia Governor William Berkeley at the request of Berkeley's fellow Lords Proprietor of the colony. Sarah Drummond was a prominent member of Bacon's Rebellion, one of the first landowning ladies in America, and the wife of William Drummond (colonial governor), William Drummond, the first colonial governor of Albemartle Sound settlement, Provence of Carolina. Early life There is little known about Sarah Drummond's early life. There is no surviving record of her birth date, birth name, parents or place of birth. In the early 1650s, Sarah Drummond married William Drummond (colonial governor), William Drummond, who was the first colonial governor of Albemarle Sound, Albemartle Sound settlement in the Province of Carolina, Provence of Carolina. William Berkeley (governor)
Sir William Berkeley (; 16059 July 1677) was a colonial governor of Virginia, and one of the Lords Proprietors of the Colony of Carolina. As governor of Virginia, he implemented policies that bred dissent among the colonists and sparked Bacon's Rebellion. A favourite of King Charles I, the king first granted him the governorship in 1642. Berkeley was unseated following the execution of Charles I, and has his governorship restored by King Charles II in 1660. Charles II also named Berkeley one of the eight Lords Proprietors of Carolina, in recognition of his loyalty to the Stuarts during the English Civil War. As governor, Berkeley oversaw the passage of many of Virginia's most restrictive laws governing enslaved people, including the 1662 slave code that determined slavery to be inheritable through the condition of the mother.
