William Dennis
William Dennis (4 March 1856 – 11 July 1920) was an Independent Conservative member of the Senate of Canada. He was born in the English county of Cornwall and became an editor, journalist and publisher. Biography Introduction William Dennis (4 March 1856 – 11 July 1920) was an Independent Conservative member of the ''Senate of Canada''. He was also the owner and President of a publishing company, and Editor-in-Chief of two newspapers, the ''Halifax Herald'' and the Evening Mail. He survived many hardships and tragedies including the loss of six of his younger siblings and five of his children, two major fires at his publishing company and the ''Halifax Explosion''. Through it all, he dedicated himself to his work, raising money through his newspapers to help the wives, widows and children of soldiers of the South African Wars (1879–1915) and victims of the Indian famine of 1899–1900, and the Famine in Japan. Agnes Dennis
Agnes Dennis, CBE (11 April 1859 – 21 April 1947) was an educator and feminist in Nova Scotia, Canada. She was one of the Nova Scotia 5 who was active in the Local Council of Women of Halifax. The daughter of Alexander Miller and Sarah Archibald, she was born Agnes Miller in Truro and studied at the Model and Normal Schools there. She taught at the Model School for two years and then married William Dennis, later senator and newspaper publisher, in 1878. She served as president of the Halifax branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses and the Nova Scotia Red Cross. Dennis helped organize relief efforts following the Halifax Explosion of 1917. She also ran the ''Halifax Herald'' after the death of her husband in 1920. She had 10 children. She died in Halifax at the age of 88. William Henry Dennis
William Henry Dennis (31 March 1887 – 18 January 1954) was a Conservative and Progressive Conservative party member of the Senate of Canada. He was born in Colchester County, Nova Scotia and became a printer and publisher. Life The son of Henry Parnell Dennis, he was educated in Colchester County and entered work as an apprentice printer in Halifax. Dennis married Hilda Wood in 1914. He became publisher of the ''Halifax Herald'' in 1920 after the death of William Dennis. Dennis was also a director for the Nova Scotia Trust Company.
