William Clancy
William Clancy (12 February 1802 – 19 June 1847) was an Irish Roman Catholic missionary in the United States and British Guiana. Life The son of a farmer, William Clancy was born in West Cork and educated at St. Patrick's, Carlow College in Carlow, and St Patrick's College, Maynooth. He was ordained to the priesthood at Maynooth on 24 May 1823. He then served as a curate until 1829, when he became a professor of theology at St. Patrick's, Carlow. John England, Bishop of Charleston, South Carolina, had been appointed as the Pope’s Legate to the Government of Haiti. Due to the additional responsibilities, England requested assistance. On 30 October 1834 Clancy was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Charleston, South Carolina and Titular Bishop of ''Oreus'' by Pope Gregory XVI. Titular Bishop
A titular bishop in various churches is a bishop who is not in charge of a diocese. By definition, a bishop is an "overseer" of a community of the faithful, so when a priest is ordained a bishop, the tradition of the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches is that he be ordained for a specific place. The Presentation Sisters, officially the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, are a religious institute of Roman Catholic women founded in Cork, Ireland, by the Venerable Honora "Nano" Nagle in 1775. A consecrator is a bishop who ordains someone to the episcopacy. A co-consecrator is someone who assists the consecrator bishop in the act of ordaining a new bishop. Michael Slattery (priest)
Michael Slattery (1783–1857) was a Roman Catholic clergyman who served as the Archbishop of Cashel & Emly from 1833 to 1857. He was born at Tipperary Town in Ireland in 1783, and was educated at the Abbey School there. He entered Trinity College Dublin when only fifteen years of age, one of the first Catholics to do so, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1804. He then decided to become a Roman Catholic priest, and was enrolled at the St. Patrick's, Carlow College. He was ordained in 1809, and continued at Carlow as a professor of philosophy and of Moral Theology. As a priest, Father Slattery served the parishes of Ulla in County Limerick for two years, and Borrisoleigh in County Tipperary for over twenty years. Edward Nolan (bishop)
Bishop Edward Nolan (1793-1837) was the Roman Catholic bishop in Kildare and Leighlin from 1834 until his death in 1837. Edward Nolan born in Tullow, County Carlow in 1793. He was educated at Carlow College from 1804 until 1811 when he went to Maynooth College. Following ordination in 1819 he taught at Carlow College serving in various roles such as Professor of Logic, Theology and Vice-President. In 1834, he succeeded Bishop James Doyle (JKL) following Doyle's death. He died on 14 October 1837, and was succeeded in the bishopric by Francis Haly. The Cathedral of the Assumption is both the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin and the parish church for the cathedral parish. Located in Carlow town, the cathedral was dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1833. It is known for its beautifully detailed spire which is one of the highest points in the town. History The foundation stone of the cathedral was laid on 18 March 1828 by Bishop James Doyle. The Cathedral of the Assumption is the second oldest Roman Catholic cathedral built in Ireland, after the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, Waterford, built in 1793; building commenced on the cathedral 7 April 1828.
