William Chisholm (I)
William Chisholm (called I in some biographies; c. 1498 – December 1564) was a British divine, and bishop of Dunblane. Life He was the second son of Edmund Chisholm of Cromlix, near Dunblane, a son of Chisholm of that ilk in Roxburghshire, and half-brother of James Chisholm, who was bishop of Dunblane from 1486 to 1527, when he resigned his see, with the consent of Pope Clement VII and King James V, in favour of his nephew William Chisholm (II). William Chisholm was consecrated bishop at Stirling on 14 April 1527, but James continued to administer the affairs and receive the income of the see until his death in 1534. Chisholm seems to have been a man of immoral character, and a nepotist, for, being an adversary of the Reformation, he alienated nearly all the property of the bishopric of Dunblane to his relations. William Chisholm (II)
William Chisholm (called II in some biographies; died 26 September 1593), bishop of Dunblane and bishop of Vaison, was a son of James Chisholm of Cromlix, and nephew to William Chisholm (I), bishop of Dunblane from 1527 to 1564, to whom he was appointed coadjutor by a brief of Pope Pius IV dated 1 June 1561. Life He is spoken of by John Knox, who was ordained a Catholic priest by Chisholm, as "one of the chief pillars of the Papisticall Kirk", and in the very highest terms by the pope's legate, Nicolas de Gouda, in his despatch from the Scottish court in 1562. The legate, after commenting on the incapacity of the Scottish bishops generally, goes on to say: "The only exception is the coadjutor bishop of Dunblane; though holding but a secondary position during the lifetime of his superior, he has already made his influence felt, both in public and in private, having succeeded in confirming a great many people in the faith, and being justly held in high esteem and regard by al ... William Chisholm (Nova Scotia Politician)
William Chisholm (December 8, 1870 – April 28, 1936) was a Canadian politician. Born in Heatherton, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, Chisholm was educated at the Common School of Heatherton and graduated in arts from the St. Francis Xavier College, Antigonish. He read law in the office of Colin F. Mclsaac, who was a member of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Commission. A lawyer, he was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the electoral district of Antigonish in a 1905 by-election. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1908 and 1911. He resigned in 1916 and was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly for the electoral district of Antigonish County. A Nova Scotia Liberal, he was a minister without portfolio from 1918 to 1925 in the cabinet of George Henry Murray and Minister of Highways from 1923 to 1925 and Minister of Public Works and Mines in 1925 in the cabinet of Ernest Howard Armstrong. William Chisholm (Upper Canada Politician)
William Chisholm (October 15, 1788 – May 4, 1842) was a farmer, businessman and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Jordan Bay, Nova Scotia in 1788, the son of a Scottish immigrant and United Empire Loyalist who originally settled in Tryon County, New York. The family moved to Upper Canada and settled near the current site of the city of Hamilton. William served in the York militia during the War of 1812 and became colonel in 1831. He settled in Nelson Township in 1816. In 1820, Chisholm was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada for Halton. He was originally a Reformer and opposed the expulsion of Barnabas Bidwell from the assembly. He had supported Robert Gourlay, and he acted as an agent for William Lyon Mackenzie's newspaper, the ''Colonial Advocate''.
