William Carlos Ives
William Carlos Ives (October 30, 1873 – July 10, 1950) was a Canadian provincial politician and provincial Supreme Court Justice. Early life William Carlos Ives was born in Compton, Quebec on October 30, 1873. His family moved to the Alberta District in the North-West Territories shortly after he was born, to ranch near Pincher Creek in 1881. Ives' father George would be one of the original members of the North-West Mounted Police in 1879. When he reached his teenage years he left home to work his first job as a cowhand. He left the territories to attend McGill University and graduated in 1899 with a Bachelor of Laws. Ives became a lawyer in Montreal shortly after graduating, being called to the bar in 1900, and worked in the city for two years before moving back to Alberta. 1935 Alberta General Election
The 1935 Alberta general election was held on August 22, 1935, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The newly founded Social Credit Party of Alberta won a sweeping victory, unseating the 14-year government of the United Farmers of Alberta. It was one of only five times that Alberta has changed governments. Premier John E. Brownlee had resigned on July 10, 1934, when he was sued and found liable for the seduction of a young clerk working in the Attorney-General's office. Although the verdict was immediately set aside by the presiding judge, the scandal seriously damaged the UFA's reputation among socially conservative Albertans. Provincial Treasurer Richard G. Reid succeeded him, but was unable to change the party's fortunes. John Edward Brownlee
John Edward Brownlee, (August 27, 1883 – July 15, 1961) was the fifth premier of Alberta, serving from 1925 until 1934. Born in Port Ryerse, Ontario, he studied history and political science at the University of Toronto's Victoria College before moving west to Calgary to become a lawyer. His clients included the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA); through his connection with that lobby group, he was involved in founding the United Grain Growers (UGG). After the UFA entered electoral politics and won the 1921 election, new premier Herbert Greenfield asked Brownlee to serve as his attorney-general. John Brownlee Sex Scandal
The John Brownlee sex scandal occurred in 1934 in Alberta, Canada, and forced the resignation of the provincial Premier, John Edward Brownlee. Brownlee was accused of seducing Vivian MacMillan, a family friend and a secretary for Brownlee's attorney-general in 1930, when she was 18 years old, and continuing the affair for three years. MacMillan claimed that the married premier had told her that she must have sex with him for his own sake and that of his invalid wife. She had, she testified, relented after physical and emotional pressure. Brownlee called her story a fabrication, and suggested that it was the result of a conspiracy by MacMillan, her would-be fiancé, and several of Brownlee's political opponents in the Alberta Liberal Party. William Francis Asbury Buchanan (July 2, 1876 – July 12, 1954) was a Canadian journalist, newspaper publisher and politician from Alberta. Donald McNabb
Donald McNabb (February 1870 – June 18, 1934) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. In 1890 he helped form a committee to raise money to buy books, periodicals and furnishings for the Miner's Library in Lethbridge. McNabb was the first member of a third party to be elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta serving as a Labor member. He was elected in the by-election for Lethbridge in 1909. During his time in the Legislative Assembly he accomplished another first in Alberta. Bill 8 ''An Act to amend the Lethbridge Charter'' was the first introduced from the opposition and a third party to receive Royal Assent in the legislature.
