William Campbell (Prince Edward Island Politician)
William Campbell (January 12, 1836 – December 15, 1909) was a farmer and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented 1st Queens in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1873 to 1886 and from 1898 to 1900 and 4th Prince from 1896 to 1897 as a Conservative member. Biography Campbell was born in New London, Prince Edward Island, the son of James Campbell and Elizabeth Montgomery, and educated there. In 1863, he married Miss E. McLeod; after her death, he married Elizabeth Sutherland in 1874. He served as lieutenant-colonel for the county militia. Campbell was first elected to the provincial assembly after Peter Sinclair resigned his seat to run for a seat in the House of Commons. He served in the province's Executive Council as Commissioner of Public Works. Campbell was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1886. 1st Queens was an electoral district in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, which elected two members to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1873 until the riding was abolished in 1996 with the elimination of dual member ridings. The district comprised the westernmost portion of Queens County. The district holds a unique place in the history of women's participation in Prince Edward Island's provincial politics. In 1970, it elected Jean Canfield to the legislature as the province's first female MLA; in 1979, the election of Marion Reid and Leone Bagnall made it the first district in the province's history to elect women to ''both'' of its legislative seats. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. New London is a Canadian rural community located in Queens County, Prince Edward Island. Situated in the township of Lot 21, halfway between Kensington and Cavendish, New London was formerly known as Clifton and previous to that, Graham's Corner. New London is primarily a farming and fishing community with its neatly manicured fields and gently rolling hills providing pastoral scenery surrounding a busy harbour. In recent decades tourism has played an increasingly important role in the community's economy. Lucy Maud Montgomery, one of Canada's most famous authors, was born in New London on November 30, 1874. Peter Sinclair (1819)
Peter Sinclair (November 18, 1819 – October 9, 1906) was a Scottish farmer and politician in Prince Edward Island. He represented Queen's County in the House of Commons of Canada from 1873 to 1878 as a Liberal member. He was born in Glendaruel, Argyleshire, the son of Peter Sinclair, and came to Queens County, Prince Edward Island in 1840 with his mother. He was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1858. Sinclair represented 1st Queens in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1867 to 1873 and from 1882 to 1900 as a Liberal. He served in the Executive Council for the province as government leader from 1872 to 1873 and as minister without portfolio from 1891 to 1898. He was unsuccessful in a bid for reelection to the federal parliament in 1878. Sinclair married Margaret MacMurdo in 1879. He died in Summerfield in 1906. Alexander Bannerman Warburton
Alexander Bannerman Warburton (April 5, 1852 – January 14, 1929) was a politician, jurist and author, who served as the seventh premier of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Alexander was born in Summerside, the son of James Warburton, who was a member of the provincial assembly. Named after Lieut. Governor, Sir Alexander Bannerman, he was educated in Summerside, at St. Dunstan's College, King's College in Nova Scotia and the University of Edinburgh. He was called to the bar in 1879. He was a director for the ''Patriot'' Publishing Company and the Eastern Assurance Company of Canada. Warburton was first elected to the province's House of Assembly in 1891 as a Liberal, and was re-elected in 1893 and 1897. He became premier of the province on October 27, 1897, when his predecessor resigned to move to British Columbia. The election was won by the governing Liberals, led by incumbent Premier Donald Farquharson. Farquharson would later give up his office in 1901 to run successfully for federal office.
