William Cage (Parliamentarian)
William Cage (died 4 November 1645) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1614 and 1645. He supported the Parliamentary side in the English Civil War. Cage was the eldest son of Edward Cage of Ipswich (d. 1607) and his wife Beatrix (d. 1631), previously the wife of Thomas Wood. He was a portman of Ipswich and seven times bailiff of the town. Cage was elected Member of Parliament for Ipswich in 1614, 1621, 1624, 1625 and 1626. Elected again in 1628, he held the seat until 1629 when King Charles decided to rule for eleven years without parliament. House Of Commons Of England
The House of Commons of England was the lower house of the Parliament of England (which incorporated Wales) from its development in the 14th century to the union of England and Scotland in 1707, when it was replaced by the House of Commons of Great Britain after the 1707 Act of Union was passed in both the English and Scottish parliaments at the time. In 1801, with the union of Great Britain and Republic of Ireland, Ireland, that house was in turn replaced by the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Origins The Parliament of England developed from the Magnum Concilium that advised the English monarch in medieval times. This royal council, meeting for short periods, included ecclesiastics, noblemen, and representatives of the county, counties (known as "knights of the shire"). Personal Rule
The Personal Rule (also known as the Eleven Years' Tyranny) was the period from 1629 to 1640, when King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland ruled without recourse to Parliament. The King claimed that he was entitled to do this under the Royal Prerogative. Charles had already dissolved three Parliaments by the third year of his reign in 1628. After the murder of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, who was deemed to have a negative influence on Charles' foreign policy, Parliament began to criticize the king more harshly than before. Charles then realized that, as long as he could avoid war, he could rule without Parliament. Names Whig historians such as S. R. Gardiner called this period the "Eleven Years' Tyranny", because they interpret Charles's actions as authoritarian and a contributing factor to the instability that led to the English Civil War. Francis Bacon (Ipswich MP)
Francis Bacon (30 September 1600 – c. September 1663) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1645 and 1660. He supported the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War. Life Bacon was the son of Sir Edward Bacon of Shrubland Hall, Barham, Suffolk, son of Queen Elizabeth's Keeper of the Great Seal Sir Nicholas Bacon by his first wife, Jane Ferneley (d. 1552). He was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge. His brother was Nathaniel Bacon. In 1645 Bacon was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Ipswich in the Long Parliament. In 1654 he was re-elected MP for Ipswich in the First Protectorate Parliament and was returned in 1656 and 1659 for the Second and Third Protectorate Parliaments. John Gurdon (died 1679)
John Gurdon (3 July 1595 – 9 September 1679) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1640 and 1660. He supported the parliamentary cause in the English Civil War and was not returned to Parliament after the English Restoration. Political life Gurdon was the son of a country gentleman, Brampton Gurdon, with estates at Letton, Norfolk, and Assington, Suffolk. He was elected to the Short Parliament and then the Long Parliament in 1640 for Ipswich. During the Civil War, he supported the Parliamentarians. Later, when internal dissension broke out among them, he supported the Army party. He remained in the House of Commons after Pride's Purge, but when named one of the Commissioners for the trial of Charles I of England, he refused to attend.
