William C. Hastings
William Charles Hastings (January 31, 1921 – July 17, 2010) was a justice of the Nebraska Supreme Court from January 31, 1979 to September 2, 1987, and chief justice from then until his retirement in 1995. Born in Newman Grove, Nebraska, Hastings attended Newman Grove High School and thereafter enrolled at the University of Nebraska, but his studies were interrupted by World War II. During the war, he worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a fingerprint analyst, also serving in the United States Army. After the war, he returned to law school at the University of Nebraska College of Law and in 1948 became an attorney with a Nebraska firm. He also served stints as a part-time county court judge. Nebraska Supreme Court
The Nebraska Supreme Court is the highest court in the U.S. state of Nebraska. The court consists of a chief justice and six associate justices. Each justice is initially appointed by the governor of Nebraska; using the Missouri Plan, each justice is then subject to a retention vote for additional six-year terms. The six justices each represent a Supreme Court district; the chief justice is appointed (and retained) at-large. Unlike most other states, with the exception of North Dakota, the Nebraska Supreme Court requires a supermajority of five justices of the seven to rule unconstitutional a legislative provision (the 48 others states require a simple majority). Norman Krivosha
Norman Marvin Krivosha (August 3, 1934 – January 26, 2021) was the chief justice of the Nebraska Supreme Court from 1978, when he was appointed to fill a vacancy, until his retirement on 1987. Early life and career Krivosha was born on August 3, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of David and Molly Krivosha. He moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he and his wife, the former Helene Sherman, were active in the Tifereth Israel Synagogue. He received a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Nebraska in 1956 before graduating from its law school two years later. He would later serve as an adjunct professor at his alma mater. He became a partner in the law firm Ginsburg, Rosenberg, Ginsburg & Krivosha until his 1978 appointment to the state supreme court. Charles Thone
Charles Thone (January 4, 1924 – March 7, 2018) was an American Republican politician. He was the 34th Governor of Nebraska, serving from 1979 to 1983. He previously served as a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Nebraska's 1st congressional district, from 1971 to 1979. Early life Thone was born in Hartington, Nebraska. He was one of four sons, including John Jr. He graduated from Hartington High School.
