William Brewster (ornithologist)
William Brewster (July 5, 1851 – July 11, 1919) was an American ornithologist. He co-founded the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) and was an early naturalist and conservationist. Early life and education Childhood William Brewster was born on July 5, 1851, in South Reading (now Wakefield), Massachusetts, the youngest of four children born to John Brewster, a successful Boston banker, and Rebecca Parker (Noyes). The couple settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1845. Brewster's sister and older brothers died in early childhood, inspiring Longfellow, a close neighbor, to write the poem ''The Open Window''. Brewster attended Cambridge public schools, Washington Grammar School and Cambridge High School, taking a preparatory course to enter Harvard. Willie Brewster
On the evening of July 13, 1965, Hubert Damon Strange shot Willie Brewster as Brewster drove past him on Highway 202 outside Anniston, Alabama; two days later, Brewster died in a hospital. In December of that year, Strange was convicted of second-degree murder; this was the first time in the history of Alabama that a white man was convicted of killing a black man. Killing On July 15, 1965, Brewster was driving home with his coworkers from a nightshift at the Union Foundry, when shots were fired into the car by white supremacist Hubert Damon Strange. Brewster was hit in the neck and died three days afterwards from his wounds. ''The Anniston Star'' published a full-page advertisement announcing that they would "pledge the sum of $20,000 to the person who supplies information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting Thursday night of Willie Brewster." William Kent Brewster (November 8, 1941 – October 3, 2022) was an American pharmacist and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, Brewster was a U.S. Congressman from from 1991 to 1997 and served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 1983 to 1990. Early life Brewster was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma, on November 8, 1941, the son of Grady Omar and Rachel Mayo Brewster. He attended public schools, graduating from Petrolia High School in Petrolia, Texas, and earned his Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1968. He was initiated into Tau Kappa Epsilon, and was a member of the United States Army Reserves from 1966 to 1971. After college graduation, Brewster moved to Colleyville, Texas, where, as a licensed pharmacist, he owned and operated Colleyville Drug.
