William Boyland (Australian Politician)
William James Boyland (1 June 1885 – 25 July 1967) was an Australian politician. He was born in Richmond to grocer William Boyland and Emma Rebecca Payne. He was an auctioneer before serving with the 37th Battalion during World War I. On 8 November 1921 he married Ella Mary Mates. He became a company director and owned land at Box Hill. He served on Nunawading Shire Council from 1922 to 1925 and on Box Hill City Council from 1928 to 1947 (mayor 1933–35, 1939–40). In 1934 he won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Nunawading, representing the United Australia Party; he held the seat until his defeat in 1937. Richmond is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Yarra local government area. Richmond recorded a population of 28,587 at the 2021 census, with a median age of 34. A.W.Howitt recorded the Kulin/Woiwurrung name for Richmond as Quo-yung with the possible meaning of 'dead trees'. Ivy Weber
Ivy Lavinia Weber (7 June 1892 – 6 March 1976) was an Australian politician. Born at Captains Flat in New South Wales to schoolteacher John Filshie and his wife Elizabeth Seaman, she was educated at the local schools, eventually becoming a physical culturist and organiser. On 11 December 1915 in Sydney she married Thomas Mitchell, a stock and station agent, with whom she had one son. They moved to Melbourne, but Thomas was killed in World War I in 1917. She married her second husband, fellow physical culturist Clarence Weber, on 7 March 1919; they had one son and two daughters. Following her husband's death in 1930, she experimented with several occupations, including as a lecturer on health and diet and a Country Party organiser. In 1937, she was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Nunawading, as an independent. She generally supported Country Party Premier Albert Dunstan in the Assembly. 10th Brigade (Australia)
The 10th Brigade was an infantry brigade of the Australian Army. Originally formed in 1912 as a Militia formation, the brigade was re-raised in 1916 as part of the expansion of the Australian Imperial Force following the end of the Gallipoli campaign. It subsequently saw service on the Western Front in France and Belgium during the First World War. After the war it was disbanded but was re-raised in 1921 as a part-time formation based in the state of Victoria. During the Second World War the brigade was used in a garrison role in Australia before being disbanded in 1942. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition. 37th Battalion (Australia)
The 37th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. It was originally raised in 1916 for service during the World War I and took part in the fighting in the trenches of the Western Front in France and Belgium and was disbanded in 1918. In 1921, the battalion was re-raised as part of the part-time Citizens Forces, although it was later amalgamated with the 52nd Battalion in 1930 due to manpower shortages. In 1937, the battalion was briefly re-raised in its own right before being amalgamated with the 39th Battalion. It later returned to the order of battle in its own right as the Australian military was expanded due to concerns of a future war in Europe.
