William Beatty (surgeon)
Sir William Beatty (April 1773 – 25 March 1842) was an Irish surgeon who served in the Royal Navy. Born in Derry, Ireland, he joined as a surgeon's mate in 1791 at the age of 18. He is best known as the ship's surgeon aboard during the Battle of Trafalgar, at which he witnessed the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson, and for writing an account of that battle – '' Authentic Narrative of the Death of Lord Nelson''. Biography Early life and education William Beatty was the eldest son of James Beatty, an officer in the Irish Revenue Service, and Anne Smyth. He was born in the Waterside district of Derry, the eldest of four sons and two daughters. No records survive of his education, though he attended a local school, most likely Foyle College, before beginning his medical studies. William Beatty (Ontario Politician)
William Beatty (January 19, 1835 – December 2, 1898) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He was born in Stonyford, Ireland in 1835 and came to Thorold in Upper Canada with his family the same year. He attended Victoria College in Cobourg, receiving an LLB in 1864. He was elected to the university's senate in the following year. He also worked with his father and brother in the timber trade. Their company operated a sawmill on the Seguin River at Parry Sound, primarily managed by William, and a steamship service between Collingwood, Parry Sound and Port Arthur/Fort William (Thunder Bay), mainly operated by his brother James Hughes. The firm set up a town at Parry Sound and William also served as a lay Methodist minister for the community. In 1867, he was unsuccessful in a bid to represent Algoma in the House of Commons of Canada, losing by 9 votes; he was elected to represent Welland in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario later that same year. William Henry Beatty
William Henry Beatty (December 10, 1833 – November 20, 1912), was a Canadian lawyer and businessman. William Henry Beatty was the eldest of three sons and five daughters of James Beatty, an Irish-born Toronto merchant. James had operated the British Woollen and Cotton Warehouse on the south side of King Street and had served in the militia, rising to the rank of colonel. In 1832, he had married Ann, the daughter of James McKowen of Dublin. He was educated at Upper Canada College from 1842 to 1845. Some years later Beatty decided to study law. He articled with John Leys and attended lectures at Osgoode Hall. He was admitted to the Bar February 5, 1863, and entered into partnership with Edward Marion Chadwick who was from an important Guelph family also of Irish origin and his future brother-in-law. William Rabb Beatty
William Rabb Beatty (June 11, 1851 – February 8, 1905) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Parry Sound in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Liberal-Patrons of Industry member from 1894 to 1898 and as a Liberal from 1898 to 1902. He was the manager for the Beatty Line, a steamship company operating on the Great Lakes. His brother Walter Beatty also served in the provincial assembly. William Beatty (1787April 12, 1851) was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. William Beatty was born in Stewartstown, County Tyrone in the Kingdom of Ireland in 1787. He immigrated to the United States in 1807 and settled in Butler, Pennsylvania. He was a sergeant in Captain Thompson's company in the War of 1812. He served as sheriff of Butler County, Pennsylvania, from 1823 to 1826. Beatty was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses. William Keith Beatty (born March 2, 1985) is a former American football offensive tackle. He played college football at Connecticut, and was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
