Nottingham (UK Parliament Constituency)
Nottingham was a parliamentary borough in Nottinghamshire, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons from 1295. In 1885 the constituency was abolished and the city of Nottingham divided into three single-member constituencies. History Nottingham sent two representatives to Parliament from 1283 onwards. In the mid eighteenth century it was influenced by the large local landowners the Duke of Newcastle for the Whigs and Lord Middleton for the Tories and as a consequence would tend to return MP from each party. The constituency was abolished in 1885 and replaced by Nottingham East, Nottingham South and Nottingham West. William Ball (astronomer)
William Ball (or Balle, 1631–1690) was an English astronomer. He was one of the founding Fellows of the Royal Society. He was appointed the Society's first treasurer on 28 November 1660, and served until 1663. He was the eldest son of Sir Peter Ball and his wife Anne Cooke, daughter of William Cooke. He became an ardent astronomer, and he gained ownership of a twelve-foot telescope. In 1655, when the Rings of Saturn had apparently disappeared due to being seen edge-on from Earth, Ball and his brother Peter observed them as a band (or "fascia") upon the planet. The same year he established the rotation rate of the planet Saturn. In 1660 he fell 30 feet onto hard ground. This accident left him in continual ill health. In 1666 he retired to his estate in Devon and in 1668 married Mary Posthuma Hussey, they raised six children. William Lee Ball (January 2, 1781 – February 29, 1824) was a nineteenth-century slave owner and politician from Virginia who served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1817 to until his death in 1824. Biography Born in Lancaster County, Virginia, Ball received a liberal schooling as a child. Political career He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1805 to 1806 and again from 1810 to 1814. William Ball (Shropshire Giant)
William "Billy" Ball (1795–1852), the "Shropshire Giant", was a nineteenth-century iron puddler and "giant". He was born in June 1795 at Horsehay, Great Dawley, Shropshire where he would live for his whole life. His exact date of birth is unrecorded, but he was baptised on 8 July. He was the first son of five children born to Thomas and Elizabeth Ball of Horsehay. As an adult he was tall and weighed more than forty stone. It was said that his "waistcoat was so big that three men could be buttoned into it". In September 1819, aged 24, he married Mary Bailey. They had two children, Eliza (1823–1824) and Thomas (1824–1839). In 1824, both his wife and daughter died. Thomas also died young, at fifteen. Next year, 1825, he married Margaret Wood (1790-c.1850), who bore him no children. He was known locally as a cheerful man with a very pleasing disposition. William Ball (April 7, 1830 – August 28, 1902) was an American politician. From 1865 to 1868, he served in the Michigan House of Representatives, where he represented the Livingston County 1st district. He served another term in the state House from 1881 to 1882, where he represented the Livingston County district. During this term, he served as speaker pro tempore. From 1889 to 1890, Ball was served in the Michigan Senate. As president pro tempore of the state Senate, Upon the death of Lieutenant Governor James H. William Macmahon Ball, AC (29 August 1901 – 26 December 1986) was an Australian academic and diplomat. Born in Casterton, Victoria, he was educated at Caulfield Grammar School and the University of Melbourne, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, Ball studied both psychology and political science as a research fellow at Melbourne and the London School of Economics respectively. He then travelled Europe as a Carnegie Travelling Fellow, and during the Munich crisis was the first foreigner allowed to visit Sachsenhausen concentration camp in several years. He was a notable diplomat, working as an advisor to the Australian delegation at the San Francisco conference of the United Nations in 1945, Australian Minister to Japan, and British Commonwealth representative to the Allied Conference. William L. Ball (July 18, 1908 – March 14, 1979) was a Canadian alpine, cross-country, and Nordic combined skier who competed in the 1936 Winter Olympics. Ball was born in North Hatley, Quebec. In 1936 he finished 54th in the 18 kilometre cross-country skiing event and 46th in the Nordic combined skiing competition. He also participated in the alpine skiing combined event but was unplaced due to not finishing the second slalom heat. William Bentley Ball, KSG (October 6, 1916 - January 10, 1999) was a prominent American constitutional lawyer, Roman Catholic layman, and former US Navy officer who gained national attention for winning the precedent-setting Wisconsin Supreme Court case '' Wisconsin v. Yoder'' in a 6-1 decision which held that requiring Amish parents to send their children to secondary school violated their constitutional right to religious free exercise. He was also the vice chairman of the National Committee for Amish Religious Freedom, the group for which he won the precedent-setting case. Ball argued 9 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.
