William Amherst Vanderbilt Cecil
William Amherst Vanderbilt Cecil (August 17, 1928 – October 31, 2017) was the operator of the Biltmore Estate through his company, The Biltmore Company. Biography Early life William Cecil was the younger son of Cornelia Stuyvesant Vanderbilt (1900–1976). He was the grandson of George Washington Vanderbilt II, and the great-grandson of William Henry Vanderbilt. His great-great grandfather was railroad and steamship baron, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. Career Cecil was a graduate of Harvard University. Upon the death of his mother, he inherited the Biltmore Estate once his elder brother, George Henry Vanderbilt Cecil, chose to take charge of the family dairy (known as Biltmore Farms) which was much more profitable at the time. Colonel Lord William Cecil (2 November 1854 – 16 April 1943) was a British army officer and royal courtier. Early life Lord William was born on 2 November 1854, a younger son of William Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Exeter (1825–1895) and Lady Georgina Sophia Pakenham (died 1909), daughter of Thomas Pakenham, 2nd Earl of Longford (1774–1835). His paternal grandparents were Brownlow Cecil, 2nd Marquess of Exeter (1795–1867), and Isabella Poyntz, daughter of William Stephen Poyntz (1770–1840), an English Whig and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1800 and 1837. Thomas Pakenham, 2nd Earl of Longford, (14 May 1774 – 28 May 1835), known as The Lord Longford between 1792 and 1794, was an Anglo-Irish peer. Background Pakenham was the eldest son of Edward Pakenham, 2nd Baron Longford, by Catherine Rowley, daughter of Hercules Rowley. His sister, the Honourable Catherine Pakenham, was the wife of the Duke of Wellington. Longford initially refused to allow them to marry, as the future Duke was then a penniless younger son with few prospects. One of his younger brothers was the Honourable Sir Edward Pakenham, a British Army officer who served under Wellington in the Peninsular War. Brownlow Cecil, 2nd Marquess of Exeter (2 July 1795 – 16 January 1867), styled Lord Burghley until 1804, was a British peer, courtier, and Tory politician. He held office under the Earl of Derby as Lord Chamberlain of the Household in 1852 and as Lord Steward of the Household between 1858 and 1859. Background Exeter was the eldest son of Henry Cecil, 1st Marquess of Exeter, and his second wife Sarah, daughter of Thomas Hoggins. His mother died shortly before his second birthday and in 1804 he succeeded to the marquessate, aged eight, on the death of his father. William Amhurst Tyssen-Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst of Hackney, (25 April 1835 – 16 January 1909) was a British Conservative Member of Parliament and collector of books and works of art. Background and education Born William Amhurst Daniel-Tyssen, he was the eldest son of William George Daniel-Tyssen, High Sheriff of Norfolk in 1843, who was the son of William George Daniel, of Foley House, near Maidstone, Kent, High Sheriff of Kent in 1825, and his wife Amelia Amherst, the daughter of Captain John Amherst and Mary Tyssen, heiress of Foulden Hall, Norfolk. Amherst's mother was Mary, daughter of Andrew Fountaine, of Narford Hall, Norfolk. In 1852, he and his father assumed by Royal licence the surname of Tyssen-Amhurst.
