Willem Potma
Willem Nico Potma (born 12 March 1969 in Sneek) is a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented his country at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Potma as helmsman in the Dutch Flying Dutchman with his brother Gerhard Potma as crew took the 18th place. In 1996 Potma returned to the Olympics in Savannah. Again with his brother and Frank Hettinga as crew. Potma took 15th place in the Soling The Soling is an open keelboat that holds the World Sailing "International class" status. Sneek (; fy, Snits) is a city southwest of Leeuwarden and the seat of the former municipality of Sneek in the province of Friesland, Netherlands. The Soling Competition at the 1996 Summer Olympics was held from 22 July to 2 August 1996, in Savannah, Georgia, United States. The competition was in a combined format. First the competitors had to sail a series of ten fleet races. Points were awarded for placement in each race. The best eight out of ten race scores did count for the placement in the match race series. After the fleetraces a series of matchraces were held to determine the winners. Flying Dutchman (dinghy)
The Flying Dutchman is a Dutch planing sailing dinghy that was designed by Uus Van Essen and Conrad Gülcher as a high performance, one design racer and first built in 1951. The boat was an Olympic sailing class from 1960 until 1992. Production The boat was built in the past by Sunbeam Yachts, Alpa Yachts, Mader Bootswerft, MacKay Boats, Plastrend/Composite Technologies, Lanaverre, Lockley Newport Boats, Advance Sailboat Corp., Binks Yacht Contructions, Chantier Naval Costantini and Mobjack Manufacturing, starting in 1951. More than 10,000 have been built. In 2022 Mader Bootswerft were still producing the design.
