Willem Eggert Van Gendt
Knight Willem Eggert, (Amsterdam, 1360 - Purmerend, 15 July 1417) was a Dutch politician (stadtholder of Holland), noble, banker and schepen of Amsterdam. He owned much land in Weesp, Monnickendam, Oosthuizen, Aalsmeer and Wognum. Biography Eggert was the son of the rich landholder Jan Eggert and member of the Eggert family. In 1392 he became advisor to Albert I, Duke of Bavaria, count of Holland. In 1404 he was made treasurer of Amsterdam. Eggert was the financier to the count, one of his main advisers in the financial field, and a powerful member in Holland. In 1410 Eggert was styled 1st Lord of the free and high fief Purmerend and Purmerland. In the same year he was allowed, by count William VI of Holland, to build his own fortified castle, Slot Purmerstein. Constructions on the castle finished in 1413. De Grebber
The De Grebber are considered to be one of the oldest noble families in Waterland and the city of Amsterdam. History The origin of the family, called ''De Grebber'' from the later 13th century, is said to be in Edam and Monnickendam, where they held extensive allod possessions. Their swan coat of arms indicates her descent from the old Lords of Waterland. Jacob de Grebber (born around 1235) was the progenitor of the family and was probably the first to bear the name Grebber. His son Claes (Klaas) Jacobsz de Grebber (d. 1313) was one of the nobles who led West Friesland to independence from Count Floris V of Holland in 1296. His brother Willem Jacobsz de Grebber is mentioned in 1315 as Baljuw of Waterland. Some of his descendants also held this office. Amstelland
Amstelland is the area along the river Amstel in the Netherlands, beginning in South Holland and running north towards Amsterdam in southern North Holland. History Amstelland's history is inextricably linked with the Amstel river and the growth of Amsterdam. Its history is essentially the history of Amstelveen, Aalsmeer, Ouderkerk aan de Amstel and the other towns. The river was important in medieval times as a waterway leading to the south and to Utrecht. The oldest settlement in the area was Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, which dated from the 11th century (and thus is older than Amsterdam). Amsterdam at this time was a small fishing village at the mouth of the Amstel. A part of Utrecht, this area was part of the seigniory ( heerlijkheid) of the Van Aemstel family.
